Steve Jobs talks about remote computing at WWDC 1997 [Blast from the past]

Almost 15 years ago, in a rare WWDC 1997 Q&A session, Steve Jobs talks about thin clients, the dangers of being too proprietary, the need for keyboards on mobile, not dating Larry Ellison, if Apple could ever compete with Microsoft and Intel, and having his home directory everywhere.

I have computers at Apple, at Pixar, at NeXT and at home. I walk over to any of them and log in as myself. It goes over the network, finds my home directory on the server and I’ve got my stuff, where ever I am. And none of that is on a local disc. The server…is my local disc.”

Video after the break. Interesting in light of what we might see on Monday, no?

We heard that Dream:scape had been submitted to the App Store way back in April; but why hasn’t it appeared for our download pleasure? Well it seems that after submitting the game to Apple, it hit a snag. The game would only run well on the latest iOS hardware; namely the iPhone 4 and iPad 2.

This caused a rethink by the developer (Speedbump) and it pulled the game for some recoding work, to enable it to run on more devices. Today, Speedbump decided to share the good news that the app has been resubmitted and will be released next week; June 9th to be precise. The newly coded version should work on iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, 4th generation iPod touch, iPad and iPad 2. Speedbump describe the game as an interactive narrative experience, an immersive exploratory environment, a haunting journey that will become your world.
Take on the role of Wilson, a coma patient relearning his past by exploring the dreamscape of his memories. Only there, in the lucid light of the subconscious, buried secrets are revealed, unraveling a decades-old mystery of tragedy, betrayal, and ultimately, revenge.
Speedbump also released a new trailer for the game which you can find after the break. It looks beautiful and I am really looking forward to getting hold of this one! What do you think?

If you have a burning desire to make phone calls or send SMS messages on your iPad 3G, you’ll be happy to know that a group by the name of iPhoneIslam has demonstrated a jailbreak application that enables calls, SMS and FaceTime via phone number on an iPad 3G.

The hack will be called PhoneItiPad and should be available in the Cydia app store before WWDC. The hack requires no additional hardware but you obviously need a jailbroken iPad 3G. This means no iPad 2 support until there is a jailbreak released for that.

Once installed you get an iPhone dialler screen which unfortunately is just the iPhone version blown up 2x. It does look a little ropey; they are working on a full resolution version for this. SMS messages do work perfectly in full screen mode on the iPad. The demo video shows how it all works and it does look like a handy feature to have.

Take a look at the demo video after the break. Then pop back here and let us know if you would welcome the ability to use your iPad 3G as a phone?

We know that Apple’s GarageBand for iPad has the potential to be able to create great pieces of music, for those talented enough be able to use it properly. One of those people is George Lambro who has created a mesmerizing guitar solo backed by drums and bass. All of the instruments were played using the GarageBand app on his iPad.
This is me creating a jam track with apple’s Garageband app for the iPad and then shredding a guitar solo over it! I am sorry about the bad video quality, but i could not find a way to record iPad’s screen in a fast framerate. Anyway i believe you will get the idea. Hope you enjoy!
Take a look at the video after the break then let us know what you think. Have any of our readers managed to get GarageBand performing as good? Let us know in the comments!

We told you that the iCade iPad arcade cabinet was coming and now the guys at Touch Arcade have got their hands on one to test. The iCade arcade cabinet is an accessory for your iPad which turns it into a retro arcade machine complete with joystick, six buttons and a glowing coin slot.

The review is very positive right from the build quality down to the actual game play. The iCade is designed predominately for use with Atari’s recent Greatest Hits app and it wasn’t found wanting!

I found tearing through these classic games on the iCade to be everything I’d hoped it to be. On the whole, it’s just an awesome experience. Holding the stick in your hand, hearing the switches click open and shut, and mashing the fire buttons is absolutely the way these classic games were meant to be played. A proper stick in your hand beats a virtual D-pad every time.

The device is designed for gaming in portrait mode. If any game needs to be in landscape you do have to take the iPad out of the iCade. It does have a place to sit externally so it is still usable in this way. There is also an API on the way to allow other game developers to use the iCade; developer Manomio has already confirmed support will be coming for its C64 emulator app. Getting other developers onboard is critical for this accessory to really succeed.

The iCade is still available for pre-order at a price of $99. Shipping is currently quoted as June 9. Take a look at the video after the break. Are any of our readers planning on picking one of these up? Let us know in the comments!

i3D, the app we posted about last month that showing a concept of glasses free 3D using Head-Coupled Perspective on the iPhone 4 and iPad 2 is now available in the App Store. There has been a huge interest in the technology with over 1.5 million views of the videos to date so it’s no surprise they released it!

i3D tracks the face of the user in real time. This information tells the app how the user is looking at the display and updates the perspective of the 3D scene giving the user the illusion that he is looking at a small window.

The app is available for free and will work with the iPad 2, iPhone 4 and 4th generation iPod touch. If you want a refresh on how well this works, take a look at the video after the break. If you download the app, let us know what your think in the comments!

The video below shows Ronen Verbit having a silly time playing with a little red ball. It doesn’t sound very interesting, until you see how he uses three iPhone 4 screens to tell the story.

Ronen, along with a few friends, were able to shoot three separate videos and combine them into one creative and fun story displayed across the three screens depicting him being ‘stuck’ inside the iPhone 4. It’s rather deviceful (no pun intended!) and they did a great job putting this together — check out the full video after the jump!

The X Gear Anti Glare film for iPad aims to make Apple’s very shiny iPad shine just a little less in our eyes. Now screen protectors have always been my arch nemesis — I have always much preferred the feel of the actual glass over the feel of any screen protector. But I figured I’d give the X Gear anti-glare version a chance to change my mind.

Did it succeed? Read on to find out!

X Gear anti-glare film for iPad - accessory review

I’m extremely careful with my devices and always have a case on them so I’m not too concerned with screen protectors. The one reason I “would” consider one is to minimize fingerprints. That’s what I was really hoping to do here. Some screen protectors seem to minimize the rate at which fingerprints take over your screen. I was left disappointed after applying the X Gear anti-glare film as it seemed to accumulate just as many fingerprints (if not more), than the naked glass did. It did seem to wipe down quicker than the glass does so I suppose that could be considered a positive. And it didn’t do too much to minimize glare either.

The process of putting the screen protector on was simple enough. If this process is something you’re unfamiliar with, check out our guide on how to apply a screen protector to your iPhone or iPad. I did end up with a few bubbles but I managed to get those out with the soft card that X Gear provides with the screen protector. They also include a cleaning cloth as well.

Overall, the quality of the screen protector was pretty good. It just doesn’t do much to minimize fingerprints. If you’re looking for something to add more protection from scratches, the thickness seems to be pretty substantial. It isn’t that noticeable when it’s on the device until you feel the screen. There’s a noticeable difference from what the glass feels like. When scrolling and sliding your finger around, it just isn’t as smooth. This is unfortunately the case with most screen protectors. It’s just not the same experience.

If you’re in the market for a screen protector that’s a bit more durable and you don’t mind getting used to your iPad screen feeling a bit different to the touch, I’d say this is a pretty decent screen protector. I still prefer the feel of other protectors better, such as the BodyGuardz screen protectors that are also available in the TiPb accessory store for around the same price.

You can check out the X Gear Anti Glare film for iPad in the TiPb Accessory store.

Pros

Easy to apply
Thicker than some other, flimsier screen protectors
After applied, it’s barely visible

Cons

Doesn’t do much when it comes to preventing fingerprints
The area by the home button didn’t stick as well as it should
The texture is a bit grippy so it takes some getting used to
I wouldn’t really call it “anti-glare”
