Zinio Updates For New iPad

Zinio has long been a serious player in digital magazines distribution, on and off iOS. Zinio first appeared on the App Store in April 2010, but offered digital magazines on its website well before that. Zinio’s iOS app updated recently and is now optimized for the new iPad’s retina display. With a vast catalog of first and second tier magazines and with periodicals available across various mobile and PC platforms, Zinio is proving they can stay competitive. Download speed has also been improved considerably in this update.

The quality of individual digital magazines is always dependant on the publishers, not Zinio or any distributors. Some magazines look like what they are – prettified PDF’s. But, when magazines like National Geographic take advantage of all the interactivity, particularly now with the crisper text and images, the reading experience parallels any on Apple’s Newsstand where many magazines have yet to be updated for the enhanced display.

Zinio’s update shows the company’s continued dedication to iOS as a platform. Until Apple can bring in more partners like Rolling Stone and somehow urge or compel all iOS native magazine publishers to support its best and newest features – a slow process considering major publications like Time Magazine, The Nation and The Atlantic have yet to adopt Newsstand, much less adapt to the latest iPad’s specs – Zinio should continue to hold their market share and possibly even see it grow.

Springpad Updates With New Features

Previously, Springpad felt quite a bit like a competitor to popular note-syncing service, Evernote. Now, with Springpad’s 3.0 release, the service has added social networking features that make the app feel similar to Pinterest.

Probably the biggest feature in the new Springpad is the ability to create collaborative notebooks with friends. In the video below, the actors demonstrate making a notebook like “Book Suggestions” where only the friends with opinions users really care about would be invited to the notebook and make suggestions.

Another feature that seems to have potential is the information automatically added to notebooks when a new entry is created. Price comparisons, maps, movie reviews, and more are added depending on what’s added to the notebook.

Users only need to follow the notebooks from their friends that they’re actually interested in, not the friend themselves. Apparently, Springpad understands that I’m not interested in seeing my friends’ rap suggestions but book and movie notebooks will work. And now, Springpad has created an Explore section with content tags that makes it easier to find notebooks from other people that are curating content that users may be interested in.

Springpad has a universal iOS app, so check it out on either the iPad or iPhone.

Elder Sign: Omens, winner of an Editor’s Choice award here at 148Apps, just received a major update last week with new additions to the game as well as options and bug fixes.

This new update makes an entirely new campaign, the Cthulhu campaign, available through an in-app purchase. The new campaign contains over 30 new adventures, ten new monsters, and four new investigators. An unlockable bonus investigator is also available. The new map in the campaign includes new gameplay features for Elder Sign: Omens. Also, available as an in-app purchase, new Ancient Ones are for sale.

In addition to the in-app purchasable campaign, a free, Yig campaign has been released with this update. Another unlockable investigator is available (different from the one with the paid campaign).

A few options have been added like skipping transitions, audio fading, and a low resolution option (likely for older iOS devices struggling to run the higher-end graphics).

Elder Sign: Omens is based on a dice game where investigators work to keep powerful Ancient Ones at bay, preventing ancient evil from invading our world through the museum’s exhibits.

Halfbrick’s mega-hit Jetpack Joyride is getting a major update in the coming weeks that will bring some big changes to the gameplay. As shown to us at GDC by Halbrick’s Phil Larsen, the game is adding Gadgets. These will be items that can be used in order to bring new skills to the game. For example, one of the initial items, the Air Barrys, can be used to jump off the ground higher, about halfway up. There’s the ability to ride Mr. Cuddles at the start of the game, bursting out of the wall at the beginning, with the new Free Ride powerup. The Ezy-Dodge missiles make for easier obstacles to dodge, as per their name. Powerups will be tiered, where multiple in a tier must be bought before the new tier is available, and two powerups are available to be activated at a time. The 1.3 update is scheduled to hit in April, and we have screens and a trailer for the game. As well, Halfbrick are working on animated shorts like the game’s launch trailer to comically flesh out the story of the lab and its origins.

Vimeo Updates App with True iPad Support

Today at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Vimeo announced the launch of a brand new edition of their iOS app. Among the upgrades is full support for the iPad.

“We’ve seen mobile traffic triple since we launched our original iPhone app in early 2011,” Joseph Schmitt, lead mobile developer at Vimeo told VentureBeat. “Now, we’ve taken what we learned while creating our previous apps and applied it to the updated iOS to improve overall design and usability. We’re especially pleased with the awesome iPad user interface, which the Vimeo community has eagerly awaited.”

In addition to iPad support, the app will allow users to browse other videos while watching, as well as including a video editor and the ability to incorporate licensed music from the Vimeo Music Store into your videos right on your iOS device. The app is free and the new update is available right now. Enjoy!

NPR Updates Official Music App for the iPad

Today is a good day for fans of music like the indigenous folk rock music of southern Papua, New Guinea as NPR has launched an updated version of their music app for the iPad. The newly launched NPR Music is a one-stop listening shop for iPad users, providing free access to basically everything NPR has to offer. Users have access to extensive music collections from a variety of genres, all organized by category for easy perusal. Furthermore, you can check out news, signature NPR programming, listen to live events or even stream entire stations all with a couple taps and swipes.

In a move that will really please audiophiles, NPR Music allows you to save playlists for later offline listening, a free service which normally locked away as a “premium” features in apps like Spotify. We do however assume that at some point the app will bombard you with endless pledge drives until you find some way to insert $ 20 into your iPad. But isn’t that a small price to pay the first time you whip out your iPad, load up your NPR app and completely blow the minds of your hipster friends?

WeatherBug Updates to 2.0

WeatherBug, by Earth Networks, has been updated to 2.0. The 2.0 version of WeatherBug has been completely redesigned with a new user interface and added some new features.

WeatherBug can now automatically update the user’s weather information based on current location data. WeatherBug finds the closest weather station to the iPhone’s current location and uses that to update the weather. The app now receives severe weather warnings and alerts from both the National Weather Service and the exclusive WeatherBug Network.

Other important features include the ability to put a pin on a map and see the current weather conditions, at-a-glance visual forecast displays, and live camera shots from the WeatherBug Network.

While WeatherBug is free (separate apps available for iPhone and iPad), WeatherBug also has an elite version at $ 0.99 that includes all free features in addition to removing ads and adding additional weather map layers. Check out the video below for an overview of features for WeatherBug.

I make no secret of the fact that I am seriously addicted to Ticket to Ride on iOS. Of all the designer board games currently rushing to the App Store, none is as polished in presentation and gameplay as TtR. Unbelievably, the translation from analogue to digital is seamless.

Yet, something has been missing from the iPhone version of the game, Ticket to Ride Pocket.

Until now, that is.

Version 1.1 has just be released to the App Store and it contains what many fans (including me) have been waiting for: Multi Mode. Is Multi Mode true online play or something more akin to Words With Friends-style asynchronous play? From my experience, the answer is both.

Multi Mode is designed primarily to be played in asynchronous mode, with players taking turns at their whim over the course of hours, days, or even weeks. However, my experience has shown that many online players prefer to simply play their game online in real time, and Multi Mode easily accommodates that choice. So, it’s the best of both worlds: head-to-head play when time permits, and asynchronous play for when it doesn’t.

In fact, the straight-up multiplayer version of the game is preferable, as turns in Ticket to Ride can be very short indeed. While I don’t want to imply that there are no strategic choices to be made in the game (quite the opposite, actually), the time it takes to play a turn is miniscule compared to a turn in Scrabble or Words with Friends. Asynchronous play is a welcome addition, but you may find yourself playing more than one game in real time.

If you’ve never heard of Ticket to Ride (gasp!) or never played TtR Pocket, I urge you to take a moment and read our glowing review of the game when it was released. Then, take the plunge and start building your railroad empire. I’ll meet you online. My Gamecenter user name is Skinnerbox. Challenge me to a game anytime!
