One solution to the problem of not having all that much money has been the infinitely depressing “staycation.” The other, better way to do it is to make traveling a lot cheaper. Justyourtrip New York belongs in the second camp. If you can get to New York City, and scrape together enough loose change to feed yourself and sleep somewhere, Justyourtrip New York will take care of all the touristy sight-seeing things on your agenda.

The heart of Justyourtrip New York is the Walking Tour section of the app. By cleverly combining the GPS and audio playback features of the iPhone, this app has made the flesh-and-blood tour guide all but obsolete.

Immediately it’s clear that ItalyGuides: Rome Travel Guide is really quite beautiful to look at. Everything about it has been enhanced to HD quality to remind you that the $5 you spent went a long way. Travel books are brilliant for helping you around new cities but you can’t beat actually being able to hear descriptions or see the sights you’re planning on visiting.

ItalyGuides: Rome Travel Guide first of all offers you a specific route in which to sightsee. Obviously you don’t have to take the route it suggests but it’s been geared towards seeing all the main sights without travelling any further than you have to. It would have been nice if some form of GPS tracking could have adjusted the route depending on where you were located but despite this, it’s a very well presented app. Covering all manners of famous sights such as The Colosseum to the Trevi Fountain and St. Peter’s Basilica, there’s a lot of beauty to take in. Once you click on a destination, you’re then taken to even more descriptions of everything you could possibly need to know, where relevant. Tapping on St. Peter’s Basilica for example then offers up an array of other things to read or listen such as information about the Vatican Grottoes or The Pieta by Michelangelo. Most of the descriptions are provided as audio tours of around 5-10 minutes long, while other shorter pieces are in text form only. Each of these descriptions are told in an interesting manner although fast readers might find themselves choosing to read the tour rather than hear it.

You can check each place to visit either via the map interface so that you know where everything is located or via an alphabetical list which is very convenient. A travel tips section is also provided although some of the advice isn’t quite as helpful as it would like to be, and the inability to view it in any way other than via a video is a bit of a nuisance.

Despite these small flaws though, ItalyGuides: Rome Travel Guide is clearly an impressive app for those travelling to the beautiful city of Rome. It’s clearly not an app that you’d use often but its attractive presentation and well thought out guides makes it a must buy if you do plan on sightseeing.

Travelling around London is something of a logistical nightmare if you don’t know the place like the back of your hand. I visit it a few times a year on business and as much as I like the place, I still struggle to understand where everything is. Because of this I rely upon the London underground map and a Tube status app to keep track of what’s going on. The problem then is what if my route involves doing something other than the underground? What if it involves a bus or the dreaded ‘walking’ thing people tell me about? Enter London Transport, an app that aims to help you get wherever you’re going in the simplest manner possible.

It’s an immensely convenient app, mostly because everything is in one place. Tapping the Planner option gives you the choice to start a new journey from mostly anywhere within the UK. As an example, I selected my home town’s rail station as the starting place and the Millbank Tower near Westminister in London. Within a couple of seconds, I’m given the ideal route depending on what time I’m departing (which is also adjustable). It tells me exactly how long my journey should take, each part of it divided up according to method i.e. walking or train. Once I get to the Tube, it tells me which line to take in what direction and where to walk to and from. I can then continue to consult the app or I can print the route out. It even keeps track of your recent journeys so you can always consult previous routes that you’ve taken. Finally, you can adjust mobility options if you happen to require a route that doesn’t involve any lifts or stairs.

The planner route is clearly hugely useful by itself. There’s more than that though. The tube section brings up an ever useful map of the underground and also helpfully updates you on what stations are nearby. As well as this, it keeps you informed as to any problems or delays on the line. A similar feature is also available for bus routes, cycle hire docking stations, trams and river services. If you prefer to take a taxi, a list of nearby taxi operators is also available as well as a hugely comprehensive list of phone numbers to contact them.

Finally, there’s a ‘Take me home’ option whereby you can select where you live and the app will tell you exactly how to get home. Particularly ideal if you’re slightly inebriated and in need of some help.

This all sounds a lot like gushing in a hugely positive way, and that’s because it is. London Transport really is a great app. I don’t like to be so overwhelmingly positive unless an app truly deserves it but this one does. The only addition I can think of that it needs is push notifications for any changes to services. Other than that though, it’s flawless and an invaluable tool to any London traveller.

ComPart Multimedia’s Rome Travel Guide features a list of 17 Roman hot spots ranging from the Colosseum to the Pantheon.

Each point of interest is pinpointed on an interactive map of Rome and can be selected to view stunning photos accompanied by informative narrated text describing the features and history of each place. Users can view points of interest in both list or map form and sort by popularity or route, making the information useful for planning site seeing adventures or as a personal tour guide upon arrival. A travel tip video is also built in for pre-planning before departure.

This is a phenomenal app that syncs all your travel data seamlessly. The Gold edition ($19.99) features push notification of things such as flight changes or itinerary confirmation.
This app brings all your travel information to your iPhone in a beautiful manner. Check it out!

From Techcrunch:

“WorldMate begins winning you over in the itinerary building stage. It offers a couple of ways to automatically build it for you. One way is to enter the info directly on WorldMate.com. The second is by email—manually, or using an Outlook toolbar. WorldMate is able to parse confirmation emails from over a hundred travel agencies, airlines, hotel chains, and car rental agencies. Once it has automatically pieced together all of your trip details and stored key data such as confirmation numbers, phone numbers and seat numbers, the itinerary is synced over-the-air to the iPhone app.”

This is a service I use fairly regularly.  It allows you to forward the confirmation emails from your travel providers to the TripIt.com and they will automatically add the details to your itinerary.

From TUAW:

Tripit.com imports and interprets your itineraries from airlines, hotel chains, ticket outlets, and other travel companies. When you receive an itinerary from one of these providers, you forward it to a special Tripit email address to have it translated into a trip plan automatically (the site supports hundreds of travel providers, and the translation from email into structured itinerary is really quite amazing). You can share your travel plans with friends or colleagues via LinkedIn, and see when your fellow travelers are heading to a city near you or when their plans align with yours.

That collection of trip plans is what you view with the Tripit.com app. The app is linked to your Tripit.com account, and displays a day by day list of flights, car rentals, and other events that make up your trips. Each event can be opened in further detail to show information such as arrival and departure times, confirmation numbers, and more. Links for airport codes bring up Google Maps of the airport vicinity, and other links can check your flight status with a touch.
