Finding the best apps around…

ZipList, popular recipe search and grocery list app, has reached one million users and, to celebrate, has created an infographic with fun stats about how people are using their mobile devices to go grocery shopping.

The infographic includes stats including demographics of mobile phone users while shopping, ZipList’s usage growth between 2010 and 2011, the most popular items added to shopping lists, and random facts such as the most common cheese! Apparently, of the 50 top items added to lists, toilet paper was the only non-food item.

ZipList helps users create shopping lists, find recipes (and add those ingredients to their lists), scan barcodes, sync lists between devices, assign coupons and notes to each grocery item and more. While ZipList has helped over one million people, other significant accomplishments include four million recipes saved and twelve million grocery items purchased while using the app. CNET listed ZipList as one of it’s Top 100 iPhone apps back in 2010.

Check out the infographic here.

WANT! is an app for essentially irrationally exuberant window shopping in a digital world where the windows are our LCD screens. Users look through the various categories of items in the app, searchable by name, or through the most popular categories. Photographs can then be swiped through, and users can indicate which items they want, by “wanting” it, similar to “liking” a post on Facebook. Items can be viewed on the web for purchasing, in case “wanting” turns into really wanting. Items can also be commented on, shared to Facebook, Twitter, or email. Users can be asynchronously followed in order to see their list of wants, and favorite WANT! categories can be saved. Of course, users can easily share their own items to the service, by either taking a photo of it with their device’s camera, or by uploading a photo from their Camera Roll. Sure, it’s social window shopping, but it means the whole practice of window shopping can be done in the privacy of one’s own home, without wearing pants. That’s usually frowned upon in public. Usually.

whole-foods-market-recipes-iphone-appPrice: FREE (link to App Store)

Whole Foods Market launched the new Recipe app for iPhone and iPod Touch.  This is a simple, elegant application that allows one to search for recipes based on dietary restrictions, as well as by main ingredient.  These are some really great features that other iPhone recipe apps don’t feature.  There are many people for whom this will make shopping trips much easier, as you can choose from recipes such as Low Fat, Gluten Free or Dairy Free.

From AppCraver:

As awareness in food preparation, such as gluten-free foods or diabetic-friendly dishes, and an appreciation for natural and organic foods grows, it’s not surprising to see so many companies responding in kind. Whole Foods Market has developed an app for iPhone that is designed to help those interested in preparing meals and dishes from natural and organic foods, with or without dietary preferences. Whole Foods Market Recipes is available for iPhone (3.0 only) for free and is actually an impressive recipe app for anyone.

Amazon Kindle for iPhone App screenshotPrice : FREE (link to App Store)

Amazon released the Kindle for iPhone app this week, and it is free!  This is fairly surprising since the Amazon Kindle 2 just started shipping within the past few days or so.  This free app allows you to sync any Kindle purchases from your Amazon online account with the iPhone app.

Amazon claims they have over 240,000 different titles available for immediate download to your Amazon Kindle for iPhone app, with most books available for $9.99.

What do you think about the difference between the Amazon Kindle and the Kindle iPhone app?

WootWatch App for iPhone

WootWatch App for iPhone

Price: Free (link to App Store)

Woot.com may be my favorite online shopping site, with it’s 1 item per day, WootOffs! and Random bag o’ crap.  I actually have a friend who has an alarm set to 10pm PST to see the daily Woot before it gets sold out.

WootWatch (available here) does a great job of showing the daily Woot deals, including those for Sellout.Woot, Shirt.Woot and Wine.Woot.  Also, if a WootOff has been detected, it will automatically update you when a new item is available (providing you leave the app open.)  Best of all, WootWatch is free!

AppShopping

is an application that allows you to check for new apps, app price changes, or updated app that come into the iTunes AppStore.

You can view applications by release date/new (paid or free); price changes; Updated apps, or you can view apps by category (via new-free, new-paid, price change, or Update)

*Note: I feel that I need to say this as I noticed numerous low ranking in the AppStore. Many people might find this application much like AppSniper, while it’s not my goal in this review to compare the applications, I do feel that each app has it’s pros and cons and that one app might fit some, while the other might fit another audience.

The application may take anywhere between 5-10 seconds to load depending on your connection. Te app will automatically open on the “What’s New” Tab. If you select the option to pick between paid or free in any of the tabs you might see red images with question marks appear. These mean that the image is still loading or there was an error in loading the thumbnail.

I really enjoyed the layout of the list of application. In he default view, it lists the app badge icon, the title, its category and price.
Under the price changes tab, you don’t have the category in the list view, but you do have the price change – exe. $3.99 -> $4.99 . You also have an image that can easily be identifiable by the the color correlating to the price change – red = price increase & green = price decrease. You also have the percentage of change.
Under the Update tab, the listing view looks much like the “What’s New” Tab
The “Categories” tab lists all the different categories, upon tapping on the category, you’ll have the list for that category and 4 sorting option (listed above).

Layout in viewing an Application’s details:
Tapping on an app in the list view will display the details for the application. It was take anywhere from 5 seconds to 10 seconds to load the details depending on your data connection. This layout is what really make this application differ from AppSniper.

You have details, and screenshots. The details page is basically split up into 3 parts – part one is the header which includes the thumbnail, the title, the category, price, developer, release date, size, and version, and compatibility. The second part has the details. Now the details section is a bit odd to me as it is like it’s own screen within a screen, in which it has it’s own scroll bar.

Part 3 are in-line thumbnails which is a nice addition. I don’t like having to hit another button just to wait for the screen shots to load (such as in AppSniper,) I personally like AppShopping more so than any other application due to the information it has in-line.

Issues:
When tapping on the category, the category does not always highlight and therefore, it is hard to discern whether on not the category is loading. Also after the category list loads and you tap on another filter, the thumbnails do not load. However there seems to be a work around (but there really shouldn’t be) if you scroll through the list, the images suddenly seem to load. Another thing I noticed was that in the app details view, the description is a bit odd to view and can be hard to navigate past the description. I’d like to have all the text in-line with everything else, not just in it’s own little “box.”

Overall:
I like where this application is going and I really prefer it over AppSniper as I don’t do much snipping but mainly to see what’s new in the AppStore. I would like the see a Watch List/Favorites List of something of the like. I think this application has several filters and lists to satisfy any new-app-craving (or older apps too) person.

Pros:
-Numerous lists and filters to choose from
-In-line picture viewing

Cons:
-No search function
-No wish list (favorites)
-Details scroll area is awkward
-Hard to scroll past details
-Details text is a little small

Woot On!

WootOn is an app for people that shop at Woot.com.

Pros:
-Displays Woot of the day & Shirt.Woot & Wine.Woot
-Has auto-refresh option
-Plays sound when new item is available (on/off option)

Cons:
-Takes a little while for the picture detail to load – doesn’t allow zooming.
-Recently it keeps crashing (especially if it cannot get the data feed.)

2.5/5

Not Recommended

FREE

Woot is a company that has “a deal-a-day” in which they sell one item for only that one day. Every now and then a Woot Off will occur in which several items show up throughout the day and the items come on a first come first serve basis. If there is a small amount in stock of that item, then it will pass very quickly and a new item will appear. In knowing this, a refreshing option is very important in this situation.

In the end I recommend going with WootWatch
