Chopin gets a contemporary and hilarious gaming makeover.

Chopin, the great Romantic composer is celebrating his 200th birthday with his very own iOS game, but don’t expect subtle piano and sweet imagery. Frederic – Resurrection of Music HD is a rhythm game with plenty of rock, techno, country, even reggae beats in the opuses and nocturnes. More than that this is one of the funniest games I’ve played. It’s available for iPhone laughs too.

Polish game developer Forever Entertainment unearthed their homegrown virtuoso and inserted him into a mash-up of modern contexts. The arcade music gaming is served between comic book style animations that take players on a trip from the crypt to the sunny shores of Jamaica, the borderlands of West Texas to New York and across the oceans to world capitals. Each setting has its own pop-culture references and musical genre.

The story starts off unspectacularly with a bizarre encounter between recently resurrected Freddy and the Muses who urge him on a quest to save music. To do so he must challenge a motley crew of not-so-bad guys in keyboard-to-keyboard duels playing his melodies arranged with decidedly contemporary vibes.

The tale can be tapped through to skip since there’s no game component to make the plot relevant, but resist the temptation. It turns funny fast and the art is excellent.

The duels are typical rhythm games with a piano bias. Notes slide down strings and players have to aim for the sweet spot on the right keys while keeping the beat as they cross the play line. There are sustained notes – denoted as  eighth-notes with a trail – and other pedal effects controlled by swipes.

The nine songs can be blasted through in under an hour in regular mode, but to win at Chopin level perfection is required and on any difficulty setting Frederic must win to advance the story and unlock new music. A little trial and error adds up to plenty of combos and score multipliers.

There are some crashing issue on older devices, but apparently a fix is in the works. Still, this behemoth – almost 900mb – is best experienced on an A5 device.

One big issue: the songs ought to remain unlocked on one difficulty while trying another. The story is great, but once is enough. Having to tap through the whole thing and replay all songs that precede a favorite is odious.

A separate quick-play mode would add a lot of replay value. Some indication of where the money spot is on the keys – perhaps in a tutorial – and more variety between the three skill levels would be welcome too.

That said, Frederic – Resurrection of Music is cleverer than most of what’s on TV and at its current price of $ 1.99 costs the same as a one-episode rental. The comic value along with great arrangements and solid gameplay makes this a worthy investment.

Melodies for Google Music Review

iPhone App – Designed for the iPhone, compatible with the iPad

Upload music to the cloud and listen to it anywhere.

Perhaps more than anything, one of favorite part about “the cloud” is that it’s given birth to services like Google Music, and along with it, apps like Melodies.

For those unfamiliar with Google Music, the idea is simple but awesome. Users upload their song library to Google, allowing them to stream their songs from any device that features support for the service. This means users can listen to their music collection just about anywhere, as long as they have an Internet connection.

With Melodies, users can access their Google Music collection from their iOS device. The app has many of the standard features expected with software like this, including a variety of sorting options – whether by artist, by genre, by album or by some other means, for instance. The app features a couple of cool extras that distinguish it from others like it, including a playlist system and the option to store an offline playlist, so users can access songs without an Internet connection.

The interface is solid and easy to navigate. More importantly, the app is quick to load music. One issue I ran into a couple of times, though, is that I had to restart it to get the app to accurately display all of my Google Music songs. Seems to be a glitch of some kind.

My main issue with Melodies has less to do with the app itself and more with the concept of using Google Music on the iPhone. Since the service depends on an Internet connection, unless users are near a Wi-Fi connection, they’ll be using their 3G connection to download music. For users on a bandwidth limit, beware: this app could cost them big if they use it often, since they will likely exceed any bandwidth caps. To be honest, I love Google Music, but just not for my phone. I prefer to just sync with iTunes than to consistently use the service on my iPhone.

Despite my personal arguments against using Google Music on the iPhone and some glitches with pulling songs from the server, Melodies is slick and fast. The app is free, too, so users have nothing to lose if they want to give it a try.

It’s been an exceptionally busy first day at CES for music focused experts IK Multimedia with the announcement of 4 different products to come from their stable very soon. It’s of particular interest for DJs of all skill levels with a number of products specifically aimed at that market.

The iRig Mix is one such product. It’s the first mobile mixer for an iOS device, promising to offer the same controls that would be expected from a professional DJ mixer. Including a crossfader, cues, EQ and volume controls all in an impressively compact format, the hardware can be used with a number of different DJ mixing tools.

One of the more clever features behind the iRig Mix is that it can be used for mixing any type of audio source including but not limited to MP3 players or CD players, all supplemented with automatic tempo matching and beat-syncing. Other features within the hardware ensures that musicians as well as DJs can gain benefits from it thanks to the extra guitar/microphone input that can be processed by other aps such as AmpliTube and VocaLive.

The iRig Mix is powered easily via a regular phone charger as well as through a laptop’s USB port for maxiumum convenience.

It’s set for release in February and is priced at $ 99.99.

What better way of using the iRig Mix than by using IK Multimedia’s DJ Rig app? Set for release soon, it’s a feature rich, double-deck DJ mixing app for iOS devices. Professional functionality oozes throughout the app such as visual cue points, crossfader curves and an on-the-fly sampler with 4 banks of 9 pads. Most originally is the ability to automatically synchronize the app audio with any external audio source thanks to DJ Rig‘s ability to listen to the device’s audio input and determine its BPM tempo.

DJ Rig is set to be available in two formats: a free version offering a reduced set of 6 effects and 1 pad sound bank and the full version priced at $ 9.99.

Other musicians haven’t been forgotten about with the iRig Mic Cast aiding those in need of a great means to record audio. It’s a pocket-sized piece of hardware that can be attached to the audio port of the iOS device in order to provide crystal-clear audio quality. It’s ideal for recording podcasts, interviews, lectures, speeches or just regular voice memos. Two different sensitivity settings ensure that the sound quality is always strong regardless of if the source is near or distant.

The iRig Mic Cast will be released this quarter, priced at $ 39.99.

Finally, in this plethora of announcements, is the iRig STOMP, the first stompbox guitar interface for iOS. Guitar and bass players can now integrate signal processing apps into their existing pedalboard setup for enhanced tone shaping and effects processing.

The device is compatible with any guitar/amp/instrument app for maximum flexibility and promises precise adjustments for guitar players who prefer to have ultimate control over the sound they produce.

Set for release in Q2 of this year, the iRig STOMP will cost $ 59.99.

We’ll be sure to keep track of the developments of all these apps that are bound to revolutionize how musicians create music.

Rebel and Bird AB and Springworks AB have announced an upcoming application that will try to help Spotify users — or at least those with Spotify Premium — discover new music while on the go. Their app, SpotON Radio, will allow users to log in to their Spotify accounts and have custom radio stations built for them based on their Spotify data. According to Rebel and Bird’s Peter Blom, “We’re all passionate music fans and love discovering new music which can often be a challenge. Even though you now have access to an endless library thanks to Spotify, it’s hard to seek out new songs and you often end up listening to the same playlists over and over again. We wanted to change that and that’s where the idea for SpotON Radio started.”

It will work similarly to Pandora, where users enter in a starting point like their favorite artist, and then the app will find similar tracks based on that. This is all based on Spotify’s API, using their library of music (accessible through the user’s premium subscription which offers the access to the tracks) to supply the tracks for the service. SpotON Radio launches on January 9th as a free app with no ads at all, though the developers tease that it may not stay that way always. The app will be available from this link, so Spotify Premium users will want to keep an eye out for this.

Say Hello to Hello Music

The concept behind the Hello Music website is a simple but brilliant one: provide members with information regarding all manner of deals and sales, on all kinds of musical goodies. The Hello Music app does pretty much the same thing, only on iOS. In other words, with an account on the website and the app on a phone, anyone looking for great deals is covered.

The site, and by extension the application, will per-negotiate discounts on a set (and limited) quantity of various items. These range from tangible objects such as amps, pedals and such, to less tangible things like studio time. Since quantities are limited the deals don’t last long (usually around 48 hours), but with a handy-dandy iOS app to monitor these deals on the go it becomes much less of an issue.

Setting up an account on the website is free. The app is free. Suffice it to say, any musicians with even a little interest in savings (and an iPhone, of course) need to take a look at this.

90 second iTunes previews starting to roll out internationally

The new, longer 90 second iTunes music previews seem to be finally rolling out internationally. They aren’t available on all songs yet, and in my testing of the Canadian iTunes Store, it seems hit in miss as to whether you’ll get them or not, but at least some songs are going the full 90 seconds.

After a November 2010 notification to record labels Apple originally switched to 90 second previews in the US back in December of last year. Why it took that email so long to reach beyond American borders is unknown, as is how long it will take to fully roll out now that it has begun.

In an effort to crowd source this, let us know if you’re seeing the 90 second previews, what country you’re in, and whether or not the 90 second previews are everywhere or just on a few songs.

Curious how to create a playlist directly on your iPhone or iPad? We already know you can create them within iTunes, but what about when you’re on the go and want a different mix to listen to?

Creating playlists from your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad is just as easy as it is in iTunes. Follow along and we’ll tell you how!

First, go to the playlist tab in your iPod app and tap Add Playlist…
You’ll be prompted to enter a name for your playlist. Enter it and tap Save
Now you can tap any of the tabs along the bottom to look for music you want to add to the playlist. Simply tap the plus song to add individual songs or whole albums.
Once you are done adding music, tap Done in the upper right hand corner.
If you need to edit your playlist (delete or add songs), simply go into the playlist and scroll up and you can edit, clear, or delete the playlist altogether.

That’s pretty much it! Next time you sync to your computer, your newly created playlists should also sync back to iTunes. I use this feature quite often on vacations and trips. I also find myself using it to add music I’ve just recently download to playlists that already exist. Do you guys use this feature?

Tips of the day will range from beginner-level 101 to advanced-level ninjary. If you already know this tip, keep the link handy as a quick way to help a friend. If you have a tip of your own you’d like to suggest, add them to the comments or send them in to news@tipb.com. (If it’s especially awesome and previously unknown to us, we’ll even give ya a reward…)
