Finding the best apps around…

Not too long ago, Zombie Smash developer Game Doctors was acquired by Zynga. Their next game, merging of Zombie Smash with the Zynga casual game machine, the Zyngification if you will, has been announced, Zombie Swipeout.

The good news? It’s an interesting game. In our few minutes with it earlier this week, it seemed very enjoyable. It borrows heavily from Fruit Ninja yet makes a few interesting twists on the swipe-things-thrown-into-the-air genre. Then there’s the aforementioned Zyngification of the game. You earn coins while playing the game to buy upgrades and progress in the game, yet your progress is limited by your energy level. All of that can, of course, be bypassed by buying in-game goods with cold hard cash.

Wether the game suffers from this paywall method is yet to be seen. Game developers are good, how much and how often you can play are dynamic — so they can change it at any time. Their goal, of course, is to tune it to maximize revenue. To do that, they need to make sure they don’t annoy too many players.

Off my soap box for a bit, the game is actually very well done and I look forward to spending too much time playing it. Unfortunately it’s only out in Canada for another week or so for some final testing. But it will be hitting the rest of the world soon enough. Keep an eye out for it.

Take Pictures From Videos with StillShot

Macadamia Apps has just released StillShot, a photo app that takes specific frames from videos.

Like the video trailer describes, we’ve all had those moments where we go to take a picture with our iOS device’s camera and ended up accidently taking a video instead. That moment might escape us forever and we’re stuck with a video instead of a picture. StillShot allows users to go back into that video and flip through the frames until the perfect picture within the video is found.

Obviously, this app could be used on purpose instead of remedying that accidental video over photo situation. I’m especially exited to try this app out with sports photography. Since the players are moving so fast, it’s often tough to get a great picture with the iPhone camera because of the limited shutter speed. StillShot should provide some great options for those action shots.

Macadamia Apps are also the creators of GroupShot, a photoediting app for group pictures, which received a 4.5/5 stars here at 148Apps from writer Michael Halloran. Michael described GroupShot as “smart and intuitive” and, overall, was “impressed” with the app. We’re expecting no less from StillShot.

Social Board Gaming For Free From MindFeud

Bored of Words with Friends? Maybe it’s time to try something a little different such as MindFeud.

MindFeud is a game in which players must lay a number of tiles down in the correct formation so that there are no duplicates and they each match with the nearest tile in some way, such as all blue tiles together or all circles in the same row. It’s easy to learn but as with many board games, it’s challenging to master.

MindFeud offers a single player mode through the robot opponent AI called ADAMA, as well as the ability to play against friends or strangers through the social features available. Real time chat has been included to make this side of play more compelling.

It’s simple yet addictive fun regardless of who you play against. Even better, it’s free to play and an universal app for added convenience.

MindFeud is out now.

We see a little teaser in the end of the video announcing that Angry Birds has shipped one billion copies. Take a look below:

That kid looks familiar – and what’s that in the background? Some sort of a Rube Goldburg contraption? Take a closer look:

We’ve seen that kid before. That looks like an iPad game we’ve played before. Let’s see. Checking in with the developer of Casey’s Contraptions, Noel Llopis tweets:

Before rumors start flying, Rovio is a perfect gentleman. Not a Zynga at all. Don’t worry, all is well :-)

Now connecting the dots, we remember that Casey’s Contraptions is one of our favorite iPad games of the past year. Yet development seemed to stop at some point. Makes a little more sense as to why now.

While we have not gotten official confirmaiton from Noel or from Rovio at the time of writing, I think we can assume that the next Rovio game will be a version of this game we loved so much.

Want to see what the next Rovio game is going to be like? Grab the old version now and give it a try.

Escape From Age Of Monsters HD Review

Escape From Age Of Monsters HD Review

By on April 27th, 2012
Our Rating: ★★★★☆ :: BEAUTIFUL RUNNING
iPad Only App – Designed for the iPad

A beautiful art style, stunning soundtrack and fun endless runner gameplay within.

Developer: Ayopa Games
Price: $ 0.99
Version Reviewed: 1.0
Device Reviewed On: iPad 2

Graphics / Sound Rating: 4.25 out of 5 stars
Game Controls Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Gameplay Rating: 3.75 out of 5 stars
Replay Value Rating: 3.75 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 3.94 out of 5 stars

Despite the name, Escape from Age of Monsters is nothing like Age of Monsters. Stepping away from the rock, paper, scissors motif, Escape from Age of Monsters uses the wonderful hand-drawn art and animations to create an entertaining endless runner. There may be slight elements of style over substance but at this price, it’s hard to complain.

Players take the role of Gizzard, a hero who must run through numerous buildings, fending off slug monsters while protecting orphan children. These orphan children are the game’s equivalents of lives. Turning lives in a game into animated children somehow makes the risk of death that bit more important.

Much of the action requires tapping buttons at the right time, as is frequently the way with the genre. In this case, red or blue walls. It’s not quite the most fascinating of obstacles, but at least things are mixed up with the prospect of flying monsters of the same colors. Whatever the obstacle, players will find themselves too busy keeping up with the game. There’s a gentle learning curve but things soon become quite frantic. There’s also the possibility of hitting the walls at just the right moment, invoking a perfect move. Complete three perfect moves and Turbo mode activates, meaning more points and faster speed for a time.

Elsewhere are power-ups and bonus items that can be acquired by slashing across them with one finger, while they drift past the screen. It’s simple to do but can require some pretty precise timing in later stages. It ensures that points increase fast so it’s worth doing.

Boss stages at the end of certain buildings require frantic tapping of the screen to gain the most points. Compared to the rest of the game, it’s very easy to do, so I’d have preferred to see something a bit more complex.

Like so many other Endless Runners, Escape from Age of Monsters encourages repeated sessions through a huge number of Game Center achievements (over 60) and also objectives that are offered at regular points in the game. It quickly inspires players to have ‘just one more go’.

Slipping and sliding around areas is more fun than smashing walls down, but Escape from Age of Monsters makes up for any potential tedium with its beautiful art style and varied selection of power-ups. It’s a fun ride that will keep players coming back for more for a while to come.

Apparently good photo-sharing services are potentially worth billions of dollars (see: Instagram). Former Vice President of Business Operations at Twitter (and ex-team manager for Search Quality Operations at Google), Santosh Jayaram, has just released a photo-sharing service of his own called Dabble. It’s not to be confused with the word game, Dabble, or Dabble, the iPad sketching app. This Dabble is a “social postcard” service.

In THIS app, users create location-based postcards of the places they’ve been. For example, if I go get a burger at a local place near me and take a picture of said burger, I may share a Dabble postcard of the burger and write a short comment like “best burger in town.” That Dabble postcard is now linked to that particular location and anyone who comes to or views that location later can see the postcard. It’s the ultimate “I was here” app.

Other Dabblers (that has a great ring to it) can comment on those postcards and those comments are also linked to that location. It’s an interesting service by an interesting guy. We look forward to see how it works out.

Sliding Puzzle Fun From Find A Way, José!

Sliding tile puzzles were arguably one of the first forms of casual game. Before games consoles and our beloved iOS devices, sliding tile games were a great way of passing the time with a toy/game that was portable.

Now, we get the fun of iOS based sliding tile offerings with a Tetris shaped style twist such as Find a Way, José!. Newly released, it’s a free game backed up by some optional in-app purchases. 15 different puzzles are available in the free version with a further 45 unlocked with an inexpensive purchase.

Extra reason to keep playing is offered through the accumulation of J-Coins which unlock extra hard levels, and there’s even a Level Builder mode so players can create their own stage.

Find a Way, José! looks to be a fun and charming way of spending spare time, falling back on traditional puzzle solving with a twist to keep players entertained.

It’s out now for both iPhone and iPad, and it’s initially free with the option of a $ 1.99 payment to unlock further features.
