Finding the best apps around…

When I first played Terra Noctis, I came away with an incredibly positive opinion. Sure it had its share of problems. In fact, it had a ton of small ones. However it was still a cool platformer that was well worth the somewhat hefty (comparably) price of $ 2.99 at the time. The cost has dropped down to $ 0.99 since then, but even that might be “too much” some some frugal shoppers. Which is why BulkyPix has brought in Everyplay Interactive to adapt a special free-to-play edition they’re calling Terra Noctis: Free Dreaming.

Free Dreaming is more or less the exact same game, albeit with a few noticeable adjustments (and a lot that aren’t so noticeable). It is, of course, free. Players can enjoy the same level of content found in the original, purchase power-ups in the shop, unlock levels with red fairies, etc… The freemium content is there, mostly in the form of purchasable fairies, but refusing to pay doesn’t gate off content so much as evenly pace its distribution. With the exception of a “Fairy Cloner” that permanently doubles the amount of fairies earned, it can all be acquired normally with a bit of patience.

In addition to the new payment (or lack thereof) model, as well as some stylish hats, there have been a number of small improvements that add up to make this the version to own. The Pumpkin Shop is accessible from anywhere, even mid-level. The shop’s interface is much easier to navigate. Virtually all of the tiny bugs and crashes have been squashed.

This definitive edition of one of the App Store’s best (and prettiest) platformers is available right now. And as I’ve already said it’s completely free. No more excuses, people.

Viggle Offers Free Stuff For Watching TV

Function (X) Inc. launched the first loyalty program for television last week called Viggle. What seems like technology similar to Shazam, the fourth most downloaded app of all time, Viggle automatically identifies the show the user is watching by listening to what the characters are saying. After users launch the app and check in to their show the app awards them with points that can be redeemed later at places such as Best Buy, Burger King, Fandango and Old Navy.

Extra bonus points can be earned by watching featured shows such as “American Idol” and in-app commercials. Currently, the app awards two points per every minute watched. Most $ 5 gift cards to places such as Starbucks and Burger King cost 7,500 points, but right now the company is running a limited time only special for a $ 5 gift card to Amazon for only 4,000 points. Users can also set reminders and read detailed information on their favorite shows from within the app as well as share their check-in on Facebook and Twitter.

Namco has released a new app that is a collection of several of their arcade games compiled into one app, appropriately entitled Namco Arcade. The games included come from Namco’s vault of 80′s arcade titles: Xevious, The Tower of Druaga, Motos and Phozon.

Xevious is a shoot ‘em up that has players shooting enemies not just in the air, but on the ground by using bombs. The Tower of Druaga is a proto-action-RPG that has players navigating mazes, killing enemies, blocking magic, and trying to collect a key to unlock the next levle of the tower. Motos has players controlling a bumper car in an arena, trying to knock their enemies off without falling off themselves. Finally, Phozon is an action-puzzle game where players collect items called moleks in order to try and match the shape in the center of the level, while avoiding the hazardous Atomic that kills upon contact.

The games can be played in one of two ways. First, they can be bought with in-app purchases outright, for prices from $ 1.99-$ 4.99 depending on the game. This unlocks them permanently, and unlocks their leaderboards and achievements functionality. The other way is to play them with Play Coins. This is similar to an actual arcade, where one coin gets one play of the game. Thankfully, Play Coins are going for less than quarters are nowadays, as $ 0.99 buys 10 coins. The player also gets one free Play Coin per day that can be spent on any game. This setup is similar to an app that Capcom put out last year.

While these aren’t exactly games that are the pinnacle of Namco’s arcade catalog, these are games that have been reissued at times in other collections, including the Namco Museum series of games on the consoles. There also is the potential for more games to be added; the requirement for 4th generation devices or later seems to indicate that these are straight-up emulations, not port jobs, which would make adding new games a hypothetical breeze. This is also a universal app, unlike the Capcom app. Namco Arcade is available now as a free download.

With all the freebies that have been flying around each week, it’s a wonder we haven’t run out. Then again, how many hundreds of apps and games are released each week? Yeah, I suppose when I think about it that way it’s no wonder we’re still going strong. Strong with savings!

… I’m sorry. Just ignore me and take a look at this week’s list. I’ll be sitting over here. In the corner.

Baseball Superstars 2012 – People love baseball. At least, that’s what I’ve heard. So yeah, here’s a baseball game. But what about the rest of us who aren’t nuts for “America’s Favorite Pastime?” Well we have this, too. Because it’s absolutely insane, anime-style baseball. Like with unnatural pitching abilities and totally wacky players. That, and the last one was pretty cool, too.

Derby Days – Now I know there are a lot of free-to-play “build X” games around these days, but none to my knowledge combine the concept with horse care. It’s usually either or as far as I know. So why not get excited about being able to build and run a horse ranch, while also caring for and breeding horses? If it were possible to trade the diminutive equines with friends than I’d say this is a sure-fire thing. Wait a second, we can do that already? Well then I guess there’s no point in holding off on downloading it.

Zombie Battle – Zombies staggering in from the right side of the screen across several “lanes.” Seems a tad familiar. This isn’t a strategy game, however. It’s more of an action defense thing. Sure, zombies have been done to death (har-har) these days but that’s no reason to discount this upgradable blast-em-up. Besides, vaporizing the living dead is almost always tons of fun.

2XL MX Offroad – Some people out there might argue about the superiority of dirt bikes versus ATVs. People like that can now have tons of fun with various what-if scenarios thanks to 2XL MX Offroad. People unlike that who don’t care much either way can also have plenty of fun with 2XL MX Offroad because it’s a crazy motocross-style racer with lots of stuff to do and stunts to (hopefully) perform.

Tiny Invaders Gains Update And Free Version

Hogrocket, developers of the very enjoyable Tiny Invaders, has some exciting news about the eventful puzzle game.

Those who have already discovered the joys to be had with spreading germs around the human body will be delighted to discover a selection of new levels in the latest update of Tiny Invaders.

Hogrocket are being a little secretive as to what the levels fully entail, and who can blame them. One thing that can be revealed however is that the final level in the pack, Tiny Teleportz, is a winning entry from a Level Design competition that was held at the Gamecity Festival in the UK last October.

For those who haven’t played Tiny Invaders before (and why not?), there’s a new and free version of the game to try out. Tiny Invaders Free/Lite comes with 15 levels to try so that players can see for themselves just what is so addictive about the concept.

Both the update and the free version are available now.

FREEday 1/20/12 – “FREE like a Summer Breeze”

Now that the holidays are well and truly over (for now), the App Store seems to have gotten back into full swing. It was a little tough choosing what to mention here because there’s been somewhat of a flood of free games released this past week, but I’d consider that a good problem to have. So here it is, a small list of zero-cost iOS games that will hopefully make for a pleasant end of the week. If nothing else they should at least make for a decent distraction, anyway.

LEGO® App4+ – It’s probably (read: definitely) not the most complicated game on this list, but LEGO® App4+ is still worth a look. Especially in a household with a young person or two. Hauling LEGOs around a-la Doodle Truck is a fun way to pass the time in itself, however the added ability to “build” stuff with virtual LEGOs is a nice touch.

Niko – Who doesn’t love a colorful puzzle/platformer… thing? No one, that’s who! Which is exactly why checking out this freebie is worth doing. Access is limited to the first six levels, but I’m thinking that’s more than enough to suffice when it comes to having fun. Plus it unlocks special rewards that can be redeemed for Habbo Hotel, for what that’s worth.

Order Up!! To Go – The comparisons to Cooking Mama are unavoidable, but I don’t really think that’s a bad thing. In fact, I’d call it great. Greater still is the way it reminds me of a Japanese PlayStation game called I am the Chef that was amazing (and never released in the states, of course). Regardless of what it’s like or what it reminds anyone of, it’s a nifty little free-to-play that includes cooking mini-games and restaurant management. Can we say “sweet?” Yeah, I thought so.

Snark Busters – I’ll admit I’ve never been a huge fan of “find the hidden object” games, but I’m more than aware that it’s a reasonably successful genre. So it’s not hard for me to imagine that there are plenty of people out there who will flock to Snark Busters. I mean it’s free, and it features a steampunk setting. About 90% of the world’s population loves both those things. It’s not guess-work, it’s science!

Uh-oh. Know what day today is? Yeah… *gulp*

Well I for one won’t let superstition get the best of me. In fact, it’s scientifically proven that getting games for free is the best way to change bad luck into good. Lucky (ha-ha!) thing I just so happen to have a list of a few of these zero-cost gems right here. Be sure to check them all out right after the break.

(NOTE: Free games are most certainly not scientifically proven to fix bad luck. However, they will kill time while sitting in the emergency room after that “unfortunate incident” with the cat and the Thighmaster.)

Hero Academy – Okay, yes, I did indeed just review this game but so what? It’s free and it just came out. It fits the criteria. That, and it’s freaking fantastic. The unassuming little turn-based strategy title did get an Editor’s Choice Award, after all…

Urban Crime – It looks like Gameloft went and took the open-world crime caper stylings of their supremely popular Gangstar series and turned it into a multiplayer game. Players can fight rivals, conquer territories, build their character and partake in an “endless” number of missions. I think we all know what we should do about this. (PROTIP: we should all download and play the crap out of it, that’s what we should do about it)

Run Like Hell! ICE COLD – Runners almost always make for a good time when stuck in some sort of dull situation in which a very small portable gaming device would come in handy. The original was no exception, and it even managed to stand-out a bit from the crowd thanks to the colorful visuals and rather bizarre concept. What with the cannibals and all. Now the very same idea (being chased by not nice things) has been combined with the main reason everyone played that slaloming classic, SkiFree (c’mon, we all know it’s true): the yeti. Yes. Yes, this will do nicely…

Mobster Wars 3D – The one thing that’s always been painfully absent from that other mob-themed online game has been true and proper visual representation. Sure it has stuff to look at, but there’s no context to it. Everything just sort of sits there lifelessly on a checklist. Now we have a game that does the genre proud, and has nifty graphics to ogle while playing it. Make sure not to fuhgetuhbout this one. Sorry, I had to.

It may be a new year, but Chillingo isn’t forgetting about their previous releases, as they have announced an update for one of their games, and a new free version for another.

Parking Mania now has free versions for iPhone/iPod touch and iPad. These are full versions of Parking Mania, where the goal is to park cars in tricky and tight spaces. Parking Mania Free features ads that can be removed, purchasable level packs, and a golden car that will allow players to not fail when they reach their last life. However, even with all these purchasable items, the game still comes with 60 levels of intense parking action! It’s more fun than actual parking is.

Just like that, we find ourselves in 2012. I’m going to side-step the expected talk of apocalypse and instead focus on resolutions. Those promises people make to themselves in an attempt to break nasty habits or set major changes in motion. We all make ‘em and we all tend to break ‘em. Sometimes. Okay, most of the time. What can I say? Healthy food usually tastes like cardboard. Although I have to admit I’ve finally managed to develop a taste for yogurt after roughly 28 years of trying. Anyway, before the inevitable failures start to set in I’ve got a small list of games that will keep the “spend less money” hopefuls on-track. At least for a little while.

Battle Legend Infinity – I’m fairly certain that this is a new thing. Combining old-school turn-based RPG battles with endless wave survival, I mean. At least, I think it is. Whether or not that’s true, it’s a neat idea. The classic video game character “knock-offs” are a nice touch, too.

Legendary Heroes – Two teams. Three heroes. Four unique abilities apiece. Legendary Heroes isn’t just another castle defense iOS game. Scramble With Friends Free – Remember Boggle? Of course. I mean, who doesn’t, right? Well now we can play a facsimile, complete with special power-ups (freeze time, etc…) on-the-go. Anytime, anywhere. Methinks a certain other multiplayer word game is going to find itself facing some unexpected competition.

Fluff Friends Rescue – I have to give The Humane Society credit, I never would have expected them to find a way to incorporate their usual dealings into a genuinely interesting game. But that’s exactly what’s been done with Fluff Friends Rescue. Think “town-building freemium” game, only instead of constructing stores and homes players will be setting up their own animal shelter.
