By signing up from within the game, players can receive a free bread pudding recipe by Emeril Lagasse, as well as a coupon for 15% off their entire next purchase at HSN.com. Players can find the recipe inside the aforementioned ‘HSN Cooks with Emeril’ restaurant venue.

Finger Cookbook

Pros:
-Badge icon appears on downloads icon to notify you of new “cookbooks”
-User submitted recipes with photos
-Sort recipes by different filters
-Easy to use UI
-Metric & English measurement conversion tables.

Cons:
-Occasional crash when refreshing the Downloads page.
-No ingredient or step check off list.
-If you press the “sleep” button on your iPhone, it interrupts the download of new cookbooks.
-Photos don’t always appear in recipes (or aren’t there to begin with. A “default” image would be nice)

3.5/5

is as you may have suspected, a recipe app. But this app is different than any of the others in that, Chef bloggers can submit “cookbooks” containing 10 recipes or more to be submitted it to the app devs for implementation into the app!

Currently the application has recipes from 11 different blogs and contain some really good looking recipes I might add.

The UI itself is fairly basic, is split into five sections and is quite reminiscent of the iPhone’s AppStore.app. First, you have the downloads section. This is where new cookbooks will appear as they are submitted, this allows you to only download the “cookbooks” that you want.

The second section is the Recipe section. This section lists your cookbooks that you have downloaded & their recipes within.

The third section is a favorites section. You can add recipes to you favorites for easy reference at a later time.

Fourth, is a the Search section. This is self explanatory…

Lastly, the fifth section is an explanation about the app & how to submit your recipes as well as some Conversion charts, in case you need to know how many milliliters are in 1/4 cup…

I was quite surprised by the quality of each recipe – written & photographed (might I add, the “Chestnuts soup with turnip tops” recipe from Irene binaghi, is mighty good.)

Some of the issues I encountered: I had the app crash when reloading the download page. This only happened to me twice ant was sporadic. In cookbooks, when displaying the list of recipes, a thumbnail photo is visible; however, in viewing the recipe by itself, the photo did not show up (this only occurred in some of them).

Overall this is a really neat concept. Some of the main things that I felt were missing from the app – a lack of check boxes to know which ingredients you have added or what step you are on. I’d really like to see this implemented. Another thing that would be really cool to see, would be a global rating system that users vote by only within the app.

whole-foods-market-recipes-iphone-appPrice: FREE (link to App Store)

Whole Foods Market launched the new Recipe app for iPhone and iPod Touch.  This is a simple, elegant application that allows one to search for recipes based on dietary restrictions, as well as by main ingredient.  These are some really great features that other iPhone recipe apps don’t feature.  There are many people for whom this will make shopping trips much easier, as you can choose from recipes such as Low Fat, Gluten Free or Dairy Free.

From AppCraver:

As awareness in food preparation, such as gluten-free foods or diabetic-friendly dishes, and an appreciation for natural and organic foods grows, it’s not surprising to see so many companies responding in kind. Whole Foods Market has developed an app for iPhone that is designed to help those interested in preparing meals and dishes from natural and organic foods, with or without dietary preferences. Whole Foods Market Recipes is available for iPhone (3.0 only) for free and is actually an impressive recipe app for anyone.

Herbs & Spices

Pros:
-Picture with every Spice or Herb
-Alternative names listed with each herb/spice
-Full description and uses of herb/spice.

Cons:
-List text can sometimes be hard to read due to background image.
-No search
-No start-from-top (explained above)

Herbs and spices is a simple database application. The application explains a multitude of spices – what they are, their history, a picture and other international names. I find this app versatile for anyone that cooks or is wandering what the heck Borage is.

Interface:
The interface is relatively simple. The names of the spices are listed next to mini pictures of those correlating spices. By tapping on one of them you will see an enlarged picture of the spice and all it’s information

While the database contains several herbs/spices, I quickly found that it wasn’t as complex as I previously perceived. It has a mixture of 66 spice & herbs and within each item, it has other correlating names it may go by. I realized that some of the spices that I was looking for were found in the “other names” information paragraph under one of the ingredients. It would be nice to include these in the list as well or add a search to the app that would search this field.

Issues:
The only problems I had with this application had to do with the interface. The initial screen that lists the spices/herbs – while the background picture might add to the user’s experience, here it is a little distracting and it is sometimes hard to read the names in contrast with the background.

The second thing is – if you scroll down the page in the details screen, then exit back to the list, and again go to a different spice/herb, you will find that the details screen is in the same place as you left it before. Meaning it does not automatically begin at the top of the screen (view video to see this).

Overall:
I think this is a good initial start for this application, however, there are still a few things that need to be ironed out – background image needs to lightened or different; automatic scroll-to-top needs to be done and a search-able names database would be very nice to have. I hope to see more spices & herbs added to the database.

The main thing I liked about this app, is that it is well designed and executed. I would love (and even pay for) a “normal” version with meat etc.

The application starts you with a list of recipes, displayed as you see your contacts.

You also have the ability to search through the recipes for keywords (as you would with your contacts.)
In the standard window, in the top-left corner is the “bookmarked” icon or also know as the favorites list. You have the ability to add or remove recipes to your favorites list. The picture below shows a list that comes standard in the favorites list (can be edited).

Upon clicking on a recipe title, you will be shown a very nice photo of the entree. Also a star-icon in the top right-hand corner appears, this allows you to select the current recipe as a favorite.

As you scroll down you will see the Ingredients list. You have the ability to check-off your ingredients as you go down the list. A very nice feature if you ask me.

Some recipes have “optional ingredients” that are recommended if you wish to add them to the recipe.
As you scroll down you will also find instructions, the instructions also have pictures! This is an excellent idea, especially for beginning chefs. I would really love a “beginner’s Guide on Cooking Basics” or something of the like that is formatted this way.

At the current time of this posting there are 70 recipes in the application. The application is updated via VeganYumYum’s blog. When a new recipe is posted it will show up in the list with a blue dot to the right of the title (as you would see for a new /unheard Podcast in iTunes.) At the bottom of each recipe, you can find a link to the original blog post that can be opened in the Safari.app
