RIM announces BlackBerry Enterprise Server... for iPhone and iPad!

Research in Motion has announced BlackBerry Enterprise Server support for iOS — namely BES and RIM’s newly acquired ubitexx technology, will soon be able to provide management and security features for iPhone and iPad.

“The multi-platform BlackBerry Enterprise Solution is designed to address a growing market and respond to requests from enterprise customers who want a secure multi-platform device management solution from a company that already delivers the gold standard for enterprise mobility,” said Peter Devenyi, Vice President, Communications Platform Group at Research In Motion. “We recognize the opportunity to continue leading in the enterprise market by providing customers with a common platform to help simplify the management of a variety of mobile devices.”

iOS — and Android for that matter — won’t get all the fancy features BlackBerrys on BES enjoy, including the new BlackBerry Balance feature which silos work from personal content, but they’ll get enough to make it very interesting for IT departments.

Microsoft once faced the choice of keeping ActiveSync a competitive advantage for Windows Mobile, hurting their platform but helping their devices, or licensing ActiveSync and gaining infrastructure share at the expense of device share. They chose the latter and now ActiveSync is a key part of iOS, Mac OS X, GoogleSync, and many Android devices. RIM had chosen to keep their technology for themselves… up until now and it begs the question — if they’re going to let BES go cross-platform, could BBM follow?

And what if any increased competition will Apple’s new “iCloud” services offer in the enterprise space?

RIM Announces Multi-Platform BlackBerry Enterprise Solution for Smartphones and Tablets
Device Management Solution to Provide Security, Management, and Control of BlackBerry Devices, Plus Secure Management for Other Mobile Devices

Waterloo, ON – Research In Motion (RIM) (Nasdaq: RIMM, TSX: RIM) is announcing today plans for a multi-platform BlackBerry Enterprise Solution for managing and securing mobile devices for enterprises and government organizations. The solution will make available the market-leading management, security and controls of BlackBerry® Enterprise Server and BlackBerry® Enterprise Server Express for BlackBerry® devices plus, through RIM’s pending acquisition of ubitexx (creator of the ubi-Suite device management solution), the solution is expected to incorporate secure device management for Android and iOS based devices and tablets, all managed from a single web-based console.

The single web-based console is being designed to provide IT administrators with a simple and efficient way to distribute software and manage policies, inventory, security and services for BlackBerry devices, as well as other mobile devices. IT administrators will be able to manage devices over-the-air, including activating devices, distributing software and applications, locking or wiping devices, enforcing and resetting device passwords, setting IT policies, and managing optional mobile applications for end users. Certain features are expected to remain exclusive to BlackBerry devices because such capabilities are built into the design of a device’s operating system. Examples include RIM’s industry-leading push technology, network and data usage efficiency, behind-the-firewall access to enterprise applications and systems, and many of the over 550 IT policies available through BlackBerry Enterprise Server. The recently-released BlackBerry® BalanceTM technology (see separate press release issued today), which supports the use of a single smartphone for both work and personal purposes without compromising the
security of corporate content or the privacy of personal content, will also remain exclusive to BlackBerry devices.

Overall, as is largely understood in the enterprise market today, organizations can expect a range of security, manageability and controls depending on different device platform capabilities, with some devices further limited by the design of their operating system.

The multi-platform BlackBerry Enterprise Solution will be comprised of optional architectural components based on the configuration of an organization’s mobile deployment and their operational needs. Optional components will include BlackBerry Enterprise Server and BlackBerry Enterprise Server Express for BlackBerry devices, and a separate, secure device management server for Android and iOS devices (based on the foundation of ubi-Suite from ubitexx). It will be possible to deploy multiple components in a virtualized environment on a single server.
Note: Registration for a product preview of the ubitexx solution is open today at www.ubitexx.com/preview.
The multi-platform BlackBerry Enterprise Solution is planned for general availability later this year.

For busy people, their phone may be a source of stress perpetuating the “always on” way of life, but with the right app, can’t it also be a source of inspiration? Maybe. Sundry Notes Pro is a note-taking app that refuses to limit itself only to text. You can include audio, ink, images, even tables and math formulas. Sundry Notes Pro also integrates with an impressive number of other services.

Yet, for those who want a simple, focused note-taking application, Sundry Notes Pro may be overkill. The barrage of features will be welcome to power users, yet it may overwhelm others.

Tap anywhere on a page to bring up a circle of icons; each of them representing a different way to enter content. From here is where you can write text, draw, or enter other forms of media.

Text is managed through a series of text boxes. The strength here is that it allows for a two-finger tap to highlight an existing box to edit.

Just like the name implies it is an extension of the KineticD backup service that is popular with small businesses.

Like most remote desktop apps for iPad, trying to work on a desktop operating system from an iPad is clunky at best. Yet that doesn’t mean KineticExtend is without value. For those who are prone to forgetting a file or need to look up some document when away from the office, this can be a life-saving resource.

The KineticD software also backs up files to the company’s servers, safeguarding them in case your computer catches fire or has some other catastrophe.

LinkedIn iPhone App 3.0 Launches

Professionals who both own iPhones and are members of LinkedIn are in for a treat. LinkedIn for iPhone 3.0 has been released, and the new app (which remains free) represents an improvement over the old one in almost every way.

The most obvious change comes in the form of a fresh user interface. Adam Nash, Vice President of Search and Platform Products at LinkedIn, explained in a blog post, “We’ve worked to bring the most common and important features to the top of the application, to make it easy to get what you need as quickly as possible. We wanted to make sure that even if you only have thirty seconds to spare, you can get something done.”

Price: FREE (link to App Store)

This is a phenomenal app that syncs all your travel data seamlessly. The Gold edition ($19.99) features push notification of things such as flight changes or itinerary confirmation.
This app brings all your travel information to your iPhone in a beautiful manner. Check it out!

From Techcrunch:

“WorldMate begins winning you over in the itinerary building stage. It offers a couple of ways to automatically build it for you. One way is to enter the info directly on WorldMate.com. The second is by email—manually, or using an Outlook toolbar. WorldMate is able to parse confirmation emails from over a hundred travel agencies, airlines, hotel chains, and car rental agencies. Once it has automatically pieced together all of your trip details and stored key data such as confirmation numbers, phone numbers and seat numbers, the itinerary is synced over-the-air to the iPhone app.”

OVERALL

In my opinion the Pros out weigh the Cons and the price tag of $9.99 is completely worth it. To have the ability of getting my document on my hand held and having them at my finger tips is worth it. I was on a film set when I was asked to operate a Sony F900 camera. Luckily, I was able to go to a website using the browser interface and download the manual on my iPhone and had the ability to quickly skim through it and figure out how to use the camera.

ReaddleDocs is a document viewer that basically covers all the ways of getting the document onto you iPhone – so there is no way that you cannot have your documents on hand.

When you purchase ReaddleDocs, you also receive 512MB of storage space on their server. This allows you to upload any documents to the server via any browser and then sync them with you iPhone via any data connection (EDGE/3G/WIFI).
When you tap on the “Online” tab, you select the server you want to connect to and then you have the ability to sync with the server so that any new documents that you have retrieved via the web (on the server) will backup to your iPhone.

Besides using your Readdle Storage space, you can also connect to your MobileMe iDisk or connect to a WebDAV enabled server.

A second way of getting documents onto your iPhone is by forwarding your attached document in an e-mail to you ReaddleDocs e-mail address (given to you when you create your online account). Then, again, you sync you iPhone with your account.

A third way, is to use the built-in browser and navigate to a document then tap on a button to download the document to your iPhone.

A fourth and final way is to transfer the documents from your computer to your iPhone via WiFi.

When viewing your documents, you can edit them – delete, move, create folders, rename folders, rename documents, mail documents, and add a document to a zip achieve.

All documents that can normally be viewed on the iPhone can be viewed via this application as well.

I really like the icons that it uses to represent the type of file
(red icon for pdf files, blue icon to doc files, etc.)

INTERFACE

Within the app you can view all your documents, view your online documents (through whichever server,) use the browser, view recently opened files and adjust settings for the app.

I think for the most part those screen are self-explanatory.

I also like the document “reader” interface. When viewing files such as *.doc, *.rtf, the viewer is simple – you can scroll through your document like you would in the iPhone document viewer, however, you have and “add” button at the top, which allows you to insert bookmarks for that document. I find this incredibly convenient when reading a large document or e-book. The toolbar at the bottom of the screen allows you to view and edit bookmarks, e-mail the document, scroll through a document quickly using the slider and a full screen button.

If you turn the iPhone to the landscape position, it automatically goes to full-screen and rotates the document accordingly.

When viewing an *.xls document, you have all the same features as above. At the top of the document, you can change between the sheets. You might also notice that when switching between sheets, arrows will appear at the bottom of the screen. These arrows are much like the arrows you would use in the browser.

When viewing images, you can view them much like you would in your photo reel, just tap the arrows to move through the pictures within that folder. You can also mail the documents via this image viewer.

Besides viewing and retrieving documents, you can also view the device photos (which might prove a faster way of delete picture on your iPhone if you have to do it that way.)

SETTINGS

In the setting screen, you have the ability to view or hide the “device photos” folder, setup mail settings – mail from and mail signature; allow WiFi network drive and apply username and password; several different viewing options including “view HTML as book”; you can also enable a passcode lock; and setup the document encoding.

ISSUES ENCOUNTERED

There is no way to move the images to your iPhone photo reel or set as wallpaper functions, while the picture is on my iPhone in a sense, I cannot actually do anything with it unless I email it to myself and do it that way. I don’t always have a data connection when I am traveling so it would be nice to move the images over to do what I wish with them.
When viewing the a PowerPoint document, the slides seems to form one large “page” (see screen shot).

WiFi Disk

WiFi Disk turns your iPhone into a portable drive – allowing you to carry your files with you on your iPhone. Only thing that you need is a WiFi connection for your iPhone and your computer to be connected to the same network (LAN or WiFi).

Pros:
-Use the web or FTP to transfer files
-Password & Username protectable
-Ability to customize web interface that a computer accesses
-Allows creation of directory and text files
-Ability to import pictures from the iPhone itself.

Cons:
-Can’t view files via “file folder” view
-when tapping on the web address note, a blank screen appears.
-After editing a text document, no way to return to full-screen mode.
-Inability to save into a standard *.txt, *.rtf, or *.doc format.

The initial screen displays a Floppy Disk and written on it is the contents of the files being accessed within the app. In the bottom right-hand corner is a “settings coin,” there you can determine whether you want to allow people to connect to the device, password & username protect it, change fonts, etc.

In the bottom left-hand corner, is the web address & FTP address that you can connect to. The standard “i” button lists a help file that should answer some of you questions if you have any. Other than being able to tap on the floppy disk to access your files, you can also tap on the button in the upper right-hand corner to view your files.

In viewing your files, you have numerous options. The bar at the bottom from left to right allows you to – refresh the file view; sort by name (ascending/descending;) sort by size (ascending/descending;) sort by date modified (ascending/descending;) and access a pop-up menu which allows you to delete all files, import a picture, create a file or create a directory.

If you import a picture you can do so either from your library or via the camera. If you decide to create a file, you first name the file, then you are taken back to view all the files. If you tap on the name of the file you just created, you can edit the file by tapping in the white area. You can also change the encoding of the text (UTF-8, ASCI!, etc) and have the ability to find a certain text and replace it with another text if you wish. When viewing these files through the web browser, they appear at simple *.htm text files that you can copy & paste into a document.

At $1.99 this is one of the cheaper file transfer apps and is recommended if you simply want to transfer files to and from your iPhone. The main things that need to be fixed here are the first three items liste3d in the “cons” section below. After that this application would absolutely be worth the two dollars.
