Finding the best apps around…

Sometimes it’s tough to get a job. And making new business contacts isn’t the most entertaining task. Well the folks at Intro Labs have a new networking solution, Intro, that helps grow user’s business networks and aids freelancers in finding new projects.

Intro uses social networks (LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, and Foursquare) and location to match potential business contacts. After users give Intro all of their networking information, it suggests potential business matches in a customized and ranked list (based on location). It even lets users “teleport” to other locations that they may be associated with to rank and list business contacts at multiple locations.

When contacts are suggested, Intro displays exactly what overlaps between users (follow the same Twitter users, worked at the same businesses, work in the same industry, etc). Users set both who they’re looking for and what industry they work in. Intro even alerts users when another user is close enough to meet up and shake hands.

Intro is available for free. The only social network that’s absolutely necessary to use the app is LinkedIn. All others are optional.

deja mi, a social networking and photo-sharing app with a business focus on local businesses, has just been released. deja mi is location-based. It gives users a stream of the happenings in their own city through the eyes of other locals. And, like Instagram, the app provides filters and frames to play with the photos before they’re uploaded.

The app also has a reward system, similar to mayors from Foursquare, but this app allows users to vote for the “Best in Show” at each venue they visit. There are also medals to earn.

deja mi’s business model focuses on local businesses that sign up with their program. Their pilot program for the app was started in the Raleigh area of North Carolina where they signed up 30 local businesses as subscribers to their beta program (bars, restaurants, and entertainment venues). I expect we’ll see more local business spring up on deja mi soon.

deja mi also has a working website for the social network for users that don’t have access to an iPhone. Check it out here.

When I was at GDC recently, a thought crossed my mind: we’re all carrying these advanced devices that can communicate with each other and with anyone in the world. Why are we still handing little pieces of card stock to each other? CardFlick tries to turn the whole exchange process into a purely digital one. Users begin by creating their digital card at the CardFlick website, or via the app. Users fill out a few basic categories that can also be added by linking together Twitter and Facebook accounts, that also can be used to log in to the service. They also can pick from over a dozen themes to give their card a sleek look.

The app’s other feature is for sharing contact info with people. The cards can either be emailed to anyone, or sent to other users of the app. It detects the user’s location, then lets cards be flicked to anyone nearby that has the app open, making it easy for users of the app to do the whole card exchange process, or just use it to show off a card designed on the device itself. Either way, it’s a unique way to get around a process that feels increasingly anachronistic.

To get it out of the way: The Proposal is not an app for proposing marriage, though it would be convenient with Valentine’s Day here. No, The Proposal is an app for a different kind of proposals – business proposals. This lets sales professionals access their proposal information directly on their iPad, in order easily make their business proposals. GPS data can be used to automatically add the user’s current address. Image locos can be added directly from the iPad or the web. Tax info can be added, along with detailed written proposals, with preset options available. This also means that proposals can be easily and quickly modified when being pitched to other clients. Proposals can be saved and exported with iTunes, saved as PDFs, printed directly form the app, or emailed directly to clients. The app also supports importing price lists as Excel spreadsheets either by being loaded into iTunes, or by being imported in from Dropbox. iPhone App – Designed for the iPhone, compatible with the iPad

A truly impressive resource for anyone interested in business.

User Interface Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
Re-use Value Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

As a big fan of learning, one of the growing trends on the App Store that I really appreciate are information-based apps. These apps function as full-fledged, interactive resources on their subject of choice.

Business Secrets by Harper Collins is one of these apps. As its title implies, this is an app devoted to the subject of business. It’s a fantastic resource for anyone interested in the subject.

The app is organized well, dividing the subject into 18 key areas. Sections include subjects like “people management,” “selling,” and one of my favorites, “dealing with difficult people.” When users click on one of these sections, the app opens a page with five new tabs. These tabs represent sub-sections within that section. For each key area, users can delve deeper into the subject, exploring sub-sections for “secrets,” “case studies,” “insights,” “quotes” and “1-minute wonders” related to it.

Many of these sub-sections are self-explanatory. Under “secrets” and “insights,” there are chapters upon chapters of information on that specific key area. Meanwhile, “case studies” offer a glance at the subject from the perspective of real-world experimentation. “Quotes” on the other hand enlightens users with wisdom from the experts. Lastly, there’s perhaps my favorite sub-section: “1-minute wonders.” Here, we find quick sound bite-like dashes of knowledge. Very useful for readers who want to benefit from the app with only an at-a-glance approach.

For an app like this, interface design is fundamental. It’s here that Business Secrets also succeeds. The app features an incredibly slick, color-coordinated interface that makes accessing its abundance of information an intuitive process. Indeed, the use of color and section division — as well as further sub-section partitioning — create a truly organized, easy-to-use experience.

Business Secrets is a superb resource for both business professionals as well as people simply interested in studying the subject. For only $ 2.99, users gain access to an impressive collection of information. Many of the insights here will certainly color business in a new light for many.

TiPb checks out the best, most must-have task management and to-do apps to get things done on your iPhone.

Top 5 task management apps for iPhone

Task management apps for iPhone are released into the App Store on almost a daily basis. My iPhone is not only a device I enjoy using in my personal time, it’s instrumental in the way I conduct business and keep myself organized.

Between running my own business, contracting for a few companies, and writing for TiPb, it sometimes becomes a task to remember where I need to be or what I need to be doing. I have yet to find an app that combines all the tools I need but the mix of apps I use do a pretty good job of keeping me sane. Follow along for my top picks and to let us know what yours are as well!

Wunderlist

There are several list and task apps on the App Store and I’ve been through several of them. I recently found Wunderlist and fell in love. Not only is it dead simple and have a beautiful interface, it also allows you to share your lists with others who use the service. Myself and my partners have a shared task list for our business. If I add an event or a meeting, it automatically syncs to their iPhones and iPads as well. Wunderlist also supports push notifications. And the best part? It’s free!

[Free - iTunes Link]

Evernote

I’ve also tried several note taking apps but Evernote still remains my favorite. It’s dead simple to use and has a gorgeous interface. I use it frequently while in meetings or for jotting down notes when I’m consulting with a client. I can e-mail my notes to the people that need them before I even step foot out of the meeting.

Evernote also allows you to add tags and different notebooks. I have tags for home, my business, travel, and everything in between. I don’t have to weed through dates and all my notes if I don’t want to. I can filter all my notes by only the tags I want to see at that exact moment. Evernote is also free but does have a paid subscription if you’d like more monthly storage space. I use Evernote quite frequently and have never ran over my free monthly allotment.

Due

Due is rather new to the App Store and has quickly earned a spot on the first page of my home screen. I have a bad habit of dismissing reminders and then forgetting that they went off. Due solves this problem for me. I can set repeat reminders and even if I dismiss the push notification, the app will continuously bug me at the intervals I defined until I open the app and actually mark the entry as done.

The overall interface is extremely slick and setting notifications couldn’t be easier. Some task management apps are a pain when entering tasks, but not Due. Heck, you don’t even have to set a reminder title if you don’t want to. You can also tweaks the settings to what you use most commonly. I typically set reminders for about 2 hours later so I have that as my default time. If I need to, I can change that. You can also set repeats and push the reminders back by minutes, hours, or even days in one quick tap.

[$4.99 - iTunes Link]

Droplr

There are many times that I want to share an image or a file with multiple people. This is where droplr has really come in handy. I can upload an image via the app and then e-mail the shortened link to as many people as I’d like. I can also tweet it or copy the link within the app as well. I especially love that they have a free Mac client as well. The iPhone and Mac version will also sync back and forth with each other. This is very convenient for when I’m taking pictures or screenshots on my iPhone that I need on my Mac. I don’t have to e-mail them to myself any longer. I can simply upload them via droplr and pick them up in droplr on my Mac.

[$3.99 - iTunes Link]

ToDo by Appigo

Although Wunderlist is now my daily task management app, ToDo by Appigo will never lose its spot on my iPhone. While it may not be as easy to use, it’s an extremely powerful task management app. I use it now for detailed projects that have separate deadlines and that have to be done in parts. If we are working on a web design project, I may want to set different completion dates on a project timeline. This is where ToDo really shines. I can organize a project in any way I like. I can mark individual parts of a project done and set reminders on the other parts.

ToDo is worth every penny if you need a very detail oriented task app. They’ve also just announced a Mac version with sync as well. So if that’s what you’ve been looking for, look no further.

Your top task apps?

Although, there are the top five task management apps that fit my lifestyle, it doesn’t mean that there aren’t other great ones floating around out there.
