Stitcher has always been a great app to go to for audio content. They have now implemented a new feature that allows then to create focus sections on a particular category. The first of these sections to launch will the a 2012 Presidential election that includes audio endorsed by the candidates themselves.

“The majority of Stitcher users listen to news and political content, so creating the Election Center was a natural step for us,” said Noah Shanok, CEO of Stitcher. “There’s an avalanche of coverage during election season and it can be tough to get the best information when you need it. We’re rolling out trending topics on demand, a first in the industry. We see this as part of our mission to further the evolution of radio by making it more relevant and accessible than ever.”

The new Election Center allows you to follow news about your candidate or candidates of choice. It also allows you to focus on particular sources or topics. Using transcription, Stitcher will allow you to search in the transcribed text of the audio features to find mentions of the topics you are interested in.

Election Center is just the first step. Expect to see Stitcher roll out the focus areas to other topics in the near future. But for now, the updated Stitcher with Election Center should be available now. Grab it at the link below.

MLB At Bat 2012 Review

MLB At Bat 2012 Review

By on April 9th, 2012
Our Rating: ★★★★½ :: HOME RUN
Universal App – Designed for iPhone and iPad

MLB At Bat 2012 is the official app for following games live from any iOS device, including watching and listening to live games.

Developer: MLB
Price: Free ($ 14.99 for At Bat subscription, $ 124.99 for MLB.TV subscription)
Version Reviewed: 5.1.1
Device Reviewed On: iPad 2, iPod touch 4

iOS Integration Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
User Interface Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Re-use Value Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 4.33 out of 5 stars

At Bat, the app for following, listening, and watching Major League Baseball games, is back for another year, bringing with it a few structural changes, but being largely the same app as years before.

The decision to go freemium this year is well worth it, especially for MLB.TV Premium subscribers, who get the paid At Bat features – box scores, Gameday (which shows live Pitchf/x tracking), and live streaming audio of all the games – for free this year. The app is also universal now, so no more having to decide which platform to pay $ 14.99 for! Hiding box scores behind the paid subscription is silly, considering that info is available for free from numerous other sources. However, video highlights are still free.

A full-screen Gameday view is available at launch of the app, showing the pitch tracker and box score information of a game with park graphics. It’s easy to switch between games, and to switch to other games, and of course to start listening or watching to them.

Live video is of course the greatest strength of At Bat – being able to watch any out-of-market game is a killer feature. For baseball addicts, this makes it possible to watch most games, and the condensed games make it easy to watch all the important action of a game in under 10 minutes. It also supports AirPlay to the Apple TV, even though that has its own MLB.TV app. This does make it easy to watch those condensed games, video highlights, and if wanting to jump a game from the device to the TV.

Sadly, archaic blackout restrictions still make it impossible to watch local teams, games aired during Fox’s Saturday blackout window, and during the Sunday night ESPN blackout window. The Fox one is particularly onerous because they make it difficult if not impossible to watch the games on Saturday that they are not airing in a local market. As well, the video can be behind live action at times, usually only by a few seconds at worst, but the delay can be greater, and sometimes it’s possible for a feed to get very behind live action.

So, for MLB.TV Premium subscribers, this really just extends out the value of the subscription, and I highly recommend it for baseball addicts. Watching baseball all day is a great life to live – and with multiple screens and iOS devices, I can now hypothetically watch 6 games in full screen at once! The $ 14.99 At Bat subscription is worth it for those who listen to game audio regularly, or really just want the condensed games. For free? Use another app to get scores and info, the lack of even box scores is absurdly restrictive.

After a long winter, especially for Texas Rangers fans (though Texas weather can rarely be described as wintry), the new baseball season is finally here! Well, technically it started a week or so ago in Japan, and then there were still spring training and exhibition games, but finally, real baseball is here, and all 30 teams are going at it, trying to win the World Series. As a fan, there are several must-have apps to keep up with all the action, even if sometimes baseball can hardly be described as “action-packed.”

MLB At Bat 2012: While this official MLB app does provide live scores, news, and video highlights, same as past years, the fun of it is still in its subscription content. $ 14.99 unlocks live audio, box scores, and video highlights. However, the app just got sweeter for MLB.TV Premium subscribers. By logging in to the service that offers live game broadcasts from anywhere (and supports AirPlay, though the Apple TV also has the MLB.TV app built in), now the mobile At Bat service comes free, thanks to the app moving to a freemium model. As a bonus, it’s now universal, instead of the iPhone/iPad split in past years.

The site is also picking up on their original reporting, as they broke a story on Joey Votto of the Cincinatti Reds negotiating a huge value long-term extension. The app itself provides news filters and push notifications to get the latest news on favorite teams and players as they happen.

It offers play-by-play win expectancy calculations, showing that based on past game results, which team is most likely to win given the current situation. It also provides the information in an easy-to-view graph, which provides an interesting visual way ot follow the story of a game, and its ups and downs, to see where victory was clinched, or an amazing comeback happened. As well, each player’s WPA (win probability added, which can go negative) is displayed, showing that based on expected outcomes, how much their performance in the game actually impacted the final result. As well, the database of players and advanced stats is easily serachable from within the app.

While the game requires more commitment then the ever-popular fantasy football due to the about ten times the amount of games in a baseball season, it’s easier to check up on a team thanks to smartphones. This app in particular makes it easy to update ESPN fantasy league teams’ rosters, check matchups, and catch up on the latest ESPN headlines and tweets from their army of analysts.

iOOTP Baseball 2012 Edition Review

iOOTP Baseball 2012 Edition Review

By on April 5th, 2012
Our Rating: ★★★★☆ :: BACK TO BACK
Universal App – Designed for iPhone and iPad

iOOTP Baseball 2012 Edition is an updated version of the prolific baseball simulator, designed for iOS.

Developer: Out of the Park Developments
Price: $ 4.99
Version Reviewed: 1.0.0
Device Reviewed On: iPad 2

Graphics / Sound Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
Game Controls Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
Gameplay Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Replay Value Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

I fear I may have underrated last year’s version of iOOTP, the baseball simulation game. I played it non-stop for weeks on end. It became an obsession, something that I played instead of other games I should have been reviewing, until I eventually had to put it down for my own good. That I didn’t mention it in an end-of-year list can only be attributed to the fact that I had worked so hard to wean myself of the addiction. This was after simulating literally hundreds of games.

Well, the new season is upon us, and with it comes iOOTP 2012. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, and Out of the Park Developments have largely not messed with the winning formula of the original game. Many of the changes come from features that are gameplay tweaks and behind-the-scenes adjustments. The game is universal now, as iPad support was added to last year’s version during midseason. Think that simulating one plate appearance at a time is just not deep enough? Well, the game now supports simulating pitch by pitch, perfect for those control freaks.

Cloud saving is not implemented, and given the file size of save data, this may be a bad idea because even tiny file sizes have had issues with iCloud. It’d still be something nice to see in some form, but save games are portable this time around with iTunes file sharing. Other tweaks to accuracy have been added, such as player award histories, accurate schedules for historical seasons, and tweaked AI for roster management and trading. The rosters are not accurate to Opening Day rosters yet, and I noticed at least one missing player, but the developers claim an update adding in accurate Opening Day rosters will be submitted. As well, some top prospects for each team have been added.

The game is really not much different than it was last year, though. It’s still a baseball simulation game, there’s no real on-the-field action, though that’s not the point. This is meant for the player who thrives for the strategy of the sport and to control what’s going on, not to swing the bat or throw the pitches themselves. The interface is largely the same as well, just with some minor tweaks, and little things like the background image always being one of Citizens Bank Park and the weather being just a random number, hardly appropriate for the climate (if it was ever 60 degrees in May in Arlington, TX, then there’s a good chance a new Ice Age had begun) are still unchanged.

This is a game for baseball freaks first and foremost, and those freaks who loved iOOTP 2011 who want 2012 players and tweaked gameplay will want to snatch this one up right away.

It’s important to take note of what’s going on in politics, especially near an election, but that doesn’t mean that we can’t mock the process and what’s said. Hugely popular cable TV station Comedy Central has clearly taken note of it as it has just released its Indecision Election Companion.

The app provides fans with exclusive jokes, interactive content, photo galleries and more. There’s an iOS-optimized version of Comedy Central’s “Indecision” blog, along with a 2012 Election Calendar and an exclusive “Peanut Gallery” commentary feature that offers exclusive live commentary from the Indecision bloggers and special guests. It also lets users share their reactions to the debate.

It’s all suitably entertaining with a keen satirical edge as it covers the spectacular highs and extreme lows of the election. Even for those not overly interested in politics, it should make the whole thing more accessible and interesting.

Comedy Central’s Indecision Election Companion is out now, it’s universal and free.

EA Mobile and subsidiary publisher Chillingo were on hand at GDC to demo some of their upcoming mobile titles, including the sequel to one of the biggest iOS franchises, and a couple of interesting new independent titles.

EA Mobile showed off Flight Control Rocket, Firemint’s next entry in their popular path management series. The core gameplay is the same as the original Flight Control: draw lines from ships to their landing points. However, the game now takes place in space (and it boasts a 70′s-esque sci-fi theme to go along with it), and new elements like snake ships that are connected, ships that split in two, and ships that drop drones as they fly by. The game also has bots that can be leveled up, and used as game modifiers, to enable bonuses or to make the game slightly easier. The game is planned for iPhone and iPad, and will be available later this month.

Chillingo and React Entertainment showed off The Act, which is inspired by games like Dragon’s Lair where the graphics are all hand-drawn animation. The game has its origins in an arcade game that was canceled in 2007 that was recently revived for the iPhone. Unlike Dragon’s Lair, where the player had little control over what the protagonist did, in this one, players can swipe left to right in varying degrees to control what they do. For example, in the demo’s opening sequence, the player must try to woo a lovely woman, the object of the protagonist’s affection, at a Casablanca-esque club in a dream sequence. The player must swipe left and right to control the intensity of his actions, from pretending to ignore her, to eventually dancing for her, but not going too far as to jump on her, or to perform the always-classy pelvic thrust.

Next, there was another Chillingo-published title, Air Mail. This game has players flying around beautiful fantasy worlds, performing missions in their biplane. There is no direct combat, no guns being fired, as missions involving dropping off packages, putting out fires with a water bucket that must be refilled, and similar missions of that ilk. As well, there are high score modes that involve limited-time and endless missions, and a free exploration mode with secrets to discover. This game was developed in Unity, and there are plans to bring it to non-iOS platforms as well.

Indie Game Forum Roundup GDC 2012

Lots of independent games get shown off at the Games Developer Conference each year. Some of them are entered in the Independent Games Forum, a special competition for indie games releasing on console, Mac/PC, or iOS. We were able to visit a few of these, listed below, and wanted to tell you all about them.

Lume
While our reviewer enjoyed the look of this game, she also said it felt kind of short. When I mentioned this to the developer at the demo kiosk, he agreed. He then went on to show me how they put this game together, with hand built sets and hand-held cameras panning through each level to give it the unique visual style it has. In addition, the planned additional levels look nothing short of brilliant and expansive, so this should be one to keep an eye on.

Pugs Luv Beats / Pug Synth
File this one under adorable, right next to hilarious. As a pug owner and fan myself, Pugs Luv Beats took my heart away. Each pug in the game represents a specific beat or musical motif, and adding hats and costumes changes the music and allows the pug to go farther and faster towards its goal. The game may be more about music performance with gaming elements, but it’s still a ton of fun to mess around with. Add the spin-off music app, Pug Synth, and I am sold.

Fingle
One thing missing from modern games, say the developers of Fingle, is touching. And not in a weird way, either. Fingle tasks two players to place their fingers onto an iPad at the same time, and solve puzzles by cooperating and, yes, touching fingers. It’s a unique and real-life-inspired game that’s making lots of waves. Imagine taking this to a party where that cute boy or girl you’re wantint to court is. Oh, yeah.

Ridiculous Fishing
Developer Vlambeer (Super Crate Box) teamed up with Zach Gage (Bit Pilot) and artist Greg Wohlwend (Solipskier) to create this funky game where the goal is to avoid fish on the way down, and hook as many as possible on the way up, then shoot them all out of the sky. Yeah, it’s wacky. But super fun to play, of course. The couple of minutes I had to check it out made me glad I’d been able to stop by and play this all-star creation.

Faraway
I have to say that I wasn’t expecting to be emotionally invested in a game that looks like this, but the music and the loneliness of that poor star affected me in a fairly intense way. From Steph Thiron, the developer behind indie-darling Eliss, Faraway is a one-touch controlled, procedurally created game that puts players in the role of a lonely star in an empty universe, holding out hope that its quest will have meaning, in the end. Fantastic score, simple, elegant graphics define this one, and I can’t wait to play the whole thing.

ASYNC Corp
This one caught my eye as I walked by its kiosk at GDC. I was attracted to the clean lines, the happy little faces, and the puzzle look right from the start. Created by Powerhead Games, ASYNC Corp starts off a simple brain teaser, asking players to switch out and connect colored squares to create larger and larger rectangles. The conceit of the shipping center is a good one, and helps get the game idea across to the player fairly quickly.

What’s left to be said about this beautiful game from the makers of award-winning Spider, The Secret of Bryce Manor? Quite a bit, apparently, as I stood and talked with the lead art designer for the game. He made sure I knew that he created the concepts behind the art, but the actual paintings were done by “real artists.” Whatever, dude, the game is gorgeous. Beat Sneak Bandit – Winner of Best Mobile Game
Rhythm games are super fun. Stealth games are, too. Put them together, and you’ve got Beat Sneak Bandit, from Simogo. Our reviewer dug this one, so I gave it a quick try at the conference. Whoo, boy it IS fun. The artwork is stylish and cute, and the music is, obviously, beat heavy and catchy. Tapping to the beat to move my little guy to the clocks in the level was enjoyable and had me feeling pretty talented, two great ways to keep me playing a game.

GDC 2012: Two Tribes Tests Toki Tori 2

Toki Tori 2 is well underway, and Two Tribes’ Martin Reujvers and Collin Van Winkel demoed the Mac version of the game at GDC’s Hollan Pavilion. The game ditches any kind of item usage as in the original, instead focusing on stomping and whistling actions that are used to interact with the environment. For example, by stomping, it can scare one creature into the mouth of a frog, who then produces a bubble that Toki Tori can ride in.

The team is striving to not lock anything artificially; everything in the game will be possible from the beginning. They are calling this a series of “knowledge-based unlocks” where the player is taught new things throughout the game, that they can then go back to use in earlier sections to find new collectibles and discover new paths through levels. They demonstrated this in several points throughout the demo, like in one area where players could discover a hidden area at the very beginning of the demo by using what they learned later on in it.

Toki Tori 2 will be released for iOS later this year, utilizing similar touch controls as the original iOS game. The PC/Mac versions are expected to launch in June, with iOS and possibly Android versions launching after that.
