Clever-looking hexagonal twist on Pipe Mania, but…

Outwardly, HungrySquid looks like an intelligent puzzle game. Its six-sided take on Pipe Mania, in which players rotate rings of pipe-containing blocks to make a path for ooze to run out from the hexagonal grid’s centre, seems like a Killer Sudoku twist on a beloved classic. HungrySquid, though, is not quite as smart as it looks. Or it’s just trying too hard.

The problem is that it tries to overcomplicate a rather simple mechanic. Hexagons aside, this is essentially Pipe Mania except you set the path before you tap the squid to release the ooze. So in fact it’s almost easier than Pipe Mania, and maybe that’s why the developers threw in a bevy of external factors to try and mix things up. There are point bonuses for tapping blocks where the ooze paths intersect, for making multiple exits out of the grid, for quickly tapping highlighted blocks after the ooze is released – and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Crucially, however, points aren’t needed for progress (the only requirement is to get the ooze out of the grid) so all the external faff seems just like exactly that – external faff.

Then again, for the kind of iOS gamer who likes to three-star every single puzzle, HungrySquid‘s complexity means it can offer plenty to occupy. It takes multiple goes, very quick fingers, and a great deal of alertness to score enough points to three-star the very first puzzle, let alone all 60. Well integrated achievements, leaderboards, and a crisp, welcoming presentation all mean that the more longstanding, dextrous gamers may be the ones who enjoy this the most.

Still, it feels like if HungrySquid had just been cranked down a notch rather than up it could be one of the iOS classics. Unfortunately, there’s so much going on that it steps on its own toes somewhat. And I’ve managed to get this far without saying that it oozes potential, so there’s that.

Track 8 Review

Track 8 Review

Our Rating: ★★★★★ :: BEAUTIFUL

Track 8 is a Metro-style music player for the iPad.

Developer: Ender Labs
Price: $ 1.99
Version Reviewed: 1.0.1
Device Reviewed On: iPad (third-generation)

iPhone/iPad Integration Rating: 5 out of 5 stars
User Interface Rating: 5 out of 5 stars
Re-use / Replay Value Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

I’ve been a fan of Microsoft’s Metro style interfaces ever since they gave the XBox a version of the interface. I don’t even have an XBox 360 anymore but I still admire the interface on my brother’s when I see it. Track 8 is a Metro-style music player for the iPad. Visually, this is my new favorite music player app.

With the new iPad’s Retina display, this app looks absolutely gorgeous. The text is crystal clear, the album covers look great, and the app fetches artist images from Last.FM for the background of the app when that artist is playing. It’s an incredible visual experience that rivals even the new Spotify interface for the iPad (which I’m a huge fan of).

Users are immediately presented with a quick view of history, new music, and most played music. The albums on this screen are in various sizes. The specific interface for flipping through albums and artists is aesthetically pleasing while still being well organized. It’s more than a simple alphebetical order of albums. There’s a grid for each letter of the alphabet. When users transition between two letters, the new one sort of forces the last one to the side as it takes over.

Down to the last detail, this app is absolutely incredible. When I was listening to my “Favorites” playlist, instead of one album cover, I was presented with a four-by-four grid of album covers in the playlist. But the playlist featured considerably more albums than 16, so the app changed one of the album covers in the grid to another one every three or four seconds. They were switched with a flipping transtion (like the new album cover was on the back of the old one). The same transition happens when taking a look at the artists section. If users have more than one album for an artist, album covers will occasionally change for those artists.

Users can even go into the settings and change the appearance and wallpaper for the app. Users can switch between a dark and light background (basically the semi-transparent sheet of grey that goes over the artist’s picture). Users can also change the “accent color” but it’s almost useless. The only interface item that I saw using the accent color was the color of the square holding the letters in the artist and albums interface screens. The wallpaper can be set if users don’t want artist backgrounds from Last.FM.

I love the Metro-style interface. But I would never buy a Windows tablet over an iPad just because of the Metro interface. With Track 8, I can get the best of both OSes. I get the superior iPad as a product, with the Metro-style music player whenever I desire to admire its aesthetics.

See The Effects Of Pregnancy With PreggoBooth

The App Store is far from low on filtering apps that adjust users’ images in numerous quirky ways. PreggoBooth is one such new addition but it does so with some pretty neat results.

The app enables the user to see how they’d look if they were pregnant and at various stages of pregnancy. Refreshingly for such an app, there aren’t any freak results, all are quite appropriate. 3 months, 6 months and full term are possible here and the app doesn’t just place a big bump on the person’s stomach. Instead, it adjusts everything about the person making for a more realistic look.

PreggoBooth is still meant to be light hearted, however, which is why users can also adjust men to look pregnant with some startling but fun results.

The app might not revolutionize anyone’s life but it’s a fun break from life and would ideally suit something like a baby shower or even bachelorette party. All images can be shared with all the major social networks.

PreggoBooth is out now, priced at $ 0.99.

    Flight+ Review

    Flight+ Review

    By on May 15th, 2012
Our Rating: ★★★★☆ :: FLY EFFORTLESSLY
iPhone App – Designed for the iPhone, compatible with the iPad

Flight+ lets users track flights worldwide in real-time. It is also packed with many other exciting features.

Developer: International Airport Flight Track Technologies
    Price: $ 2.99
    Version: 1.1
    App Reviewed on: iPhone 4S

iPhone Integration Rating: 3.75 out of 5 stars
User Interface Rating: 4.25 out of 5 stars
Re-use / Replay Value Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Flying can bring out a fair amount of anxiety in anyone. Checking to see if the airplane arrives on time, wondering if loved ones are safe and even making a connecting flight are all issues that cause people to frantically scour the internet for details to soothe their fears.

Flight+ is a travel app that is unlike others in the App Store because it provides users with more than just detailed flight information. From gate information, weather forecasts and detailed seat maps to real-time flight tracking, there’s no need to worry about flying ever again.

Reminiscent of Apple’s Reminders, the layout and interface are both appealing and easy-to-use. The navigation bar at the bottom helps users explore all the categories, while the intuitive swipe gestures make it easy to navigate. It all may look overwhelming at first, but users will quickly adapt after taking a few minutes to explore all its features.

With data for more than 16,000 airports, Flight+ is quite the gem for users who travel frequently. Searching and adding a flight is easy as pie. Tap the plus button and enter as many details as possible. The app then searches through the flight database to pull up relevant information about flights that are organized by scheduled, en route and past flights. Users can even link their TripIt account to import all their flights directly into the app, which is a great time-saver.

One of the neatest features is the option to share flight details and information via email, Facebook, text message and Twitter. Users can even sync the app with their Calendar and add personal notes to flights. However, Flight+ doesn’t offer iCloud sync for flights which is a letdown for those who use utilize it.

There are a couple of other disappointment with Flight+. The first is that there is no universal app. The iPad and iPhone versions are sold separately so users with these devices must purchase both apps. The iPad version does have a slightly different interface that takes advantage of the larger screen, but it doesn’t appear that there is much difference between the two. The second is that there isn’t a convenient way to locate alternate flights within the app.

In a nutshell, Flight+ is a well-designed travel app that is perfect for those who fly frequently. The option to schedule reminders and alerts in addition to all the other features gives it an edge over all the competitors. I recommend Flight+ to anyone looking for a comprehensive flight app that goes the extra mile to help keep flyers’ minds at ease.

Overall Rating: 4.25 out of 5 stars

I grew up on a diet of science fiction TV shows. Star Trek showed me a future in which an Universal translator meant we could communicate with anyone regardless of language with The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and Doctor Who showing similar results. iTranslate Voice is an app that makes that concept one step closer to reality.

It sounds a little too good to be true but impressively, it works. Users simply speak into the iOS device after selecting their relevant language, and the app quickly translates. It is genuinely as easy as that. It can be used alone in order to quickly translate something or as a bridge between two people who are fluent in different languages, thus fulfilling the Universal translator idea. It’s pretty accurate, too. I found that the best results were when speaking clearly at the device, rather than mumbling or speaking quietly, otherwise it was liable to confuse words such as test for pest. Other than that, things are speedy and effective. There’s not even a need to calibrate the app beforehand, as it just works.

31 languages are catered for, including variants such as Cantonese Chinese as well as Mandarin. The vast majority of European languages are included, as well as Japanese, Korean and Russian. Text based input can also be used for languages such as Arabic, Catalan, Greek and Hindi but voice recognition isn’t quite there yet.

Further functionality comes through this text input as for any of the languages, users can type in what they want to say rather than speak. This doubles up as an easy to use app for translating text rather than having to resort to something like Google Translate. A Definitions feature also becomes very useful here, especially given how some words can mean slightly different things depending on the language or dialect.

For the price, iTranslate Voice is very impressive stuff. While it requires an internet connection to work, no other additional hardware is required, making it a great ‘out of the box’ solution for regular travellers. The future is that one step closer. Now all we need is hoverboards and jetpacks.

Take Pictures From Videos with StillShot

Macadamia Apps has just released StillShot, a photo app that takes specific frames from videos.

Like the video trailer describes, we’ve all had those moments where we go to take a picture with our iOS device’s camera and ended up accidently taking a video instead. That moment might escape us forever and we’re stuck with a video instead of a picture. StillShot allows users to go back into that video and flip through the frames until the perfect picture within the video is found.

Obviously, this app could be used on purpose instead of remedying that accidental video over photo situation. I’m especially exited to try this app out with sports photography. Since the players are moving so fast, it’s often tough to get a great picture with the iPhone camera because of the limited shutter speed. StillShot should provide some great options for those action shots.

Macadamia Apps are also the creators of GroupShot, a photoediting app for group pictures, which received a 4.5/5 stars here at 148Apps from writer Michael Halloran. Michael described GroupShot as “smart and intuitive” and, overall, was “impressed” with the app. We’re expecting no less from StillShot.

Universal App – Designed for iPhone and iPad

LostWinds2: Winter of the Melodias takes all the wind play from the original and ups the ante. A lot.

Overall Rating: 4.13 out of 5 stars

I’ll admit that I kinda missed the boat on the original LostWinds. Long story short, I just never got around to playing much of it. LostWinds2: Winter of the Melodias, on the other hand, has a firm grip on my attention and refuses to let go. It’s everything that the first game was lauded for and more. Not just more abilities but a whole new set of rules that make the puzzles much more devious and, dare I say it, even more interesting.

Winter of the Melodias begins with Toku’s mother in need of a rescue. It’s an adventure that will lead the young boy and his windy deity friend, Enril, through arctic mountain ranges, long forgotten ruins, and beyond. It’s not just the story and the environments that are new here. Enril (and by extension Toku) has a whole new bag of tricks this time around. Many of the puzzles players have become accustomed to from the original are still here – such as blowing fire around to light torches – but it isn’t long before stuff like freezing enemies with arctic winds or even switching the very seasons comes into play.

As interesting as I found Lost Winds, the puzzles didn’t do much for me. However once Winter of the Melodias got going and started to overlap elements I was hooked. Simply traversing one room could require switching to summer to unfreeze a body of water, sucking up the pool in a vortex, moving the resulting cloud with a small gust, redistributing the water in a new location, switching back to winter, then conjuring a snowball with a cyclone to trigger a switch to open a locked door. It gets pretty crazy to say the least. In a good way.

There were some issues with the original regarding the somewhat unorthodox touch controls, so they implemented a virtual stick option. Both sets of controls are still available in Winter of the Melodias, but I honestly found the default touch controls to be more than adequate. One or two slips ups occurred every now and then, but overall it works really well. A bigger problem for me was the map. It gives a decent idea of what direction to head but it’s still incredibly vague. What irritated me most about this was trying to find save points. They don’t show up on the map at all. It makes trying to quickly save a session before turning off the game for various reasons a huge hassle.

I can’t stress enough just how intriguing the puzzles in Winter of the Melodias can be. It’s a thoroughly enthralling and totally gorgeous adventure. It’s not perfect, but it’s absolutely worth it for fans of the original and the genre in general.

Farmers have been known to be a bit of a surly lot.  These are the kind of individuals that shoot first and ask questions later, if there is anything left of you to begin with.  Now imagine taking these same folks and stage an invasion from outer space.  Let’s just say that it was a good thing that Clark Kent was invincible, otherwise he would have suffered the same fate as the uninvited visitors in the new free-to-play game, Farm Invasion.

As farfetched as it may seem, when aliens attack this poor farmer’s homestead, instead of running for the hills, he grabs all of the ammo he can find and fires up the nearest harvester.  This farmer then sets off on an rampage that would put Will Smith to shame, while simultaneously giving the invading forces his best rendition of, “Welcome to ERF!”  It is a brutal sight to say the least.

The game plays on a two  dimensional plane that allows players to move from front to back, harvesting as much corn as they can, while decimating the every alien in their path.  Who knew that harvesters also doubled as extra-terrestrial meat grinders?  Apparently all that this overpowered killing machine cannot mow through are solid objects like trees, crashed space ships and, of all things, randomly scattered outhouses.

Along the way players will unlock untold numbers of power-ups and abilities that can be used to increase crop yield, gain extra health and even unlock different stages.  Really, the only element that reinforces that this is a free-to-play game is that certain power-ups can be purchased using cash, and there is an ad that appears in the top-left corner, that can be turned off if the price is right.

The best part is that there are no limits to the actual amount of game time that is available without making a purchase, which is becoming more and more rare.  While it is far from a perfect game and may lack the depth of similar games that are not free, when you consider that it costs nothing and takes up fairly little space on an iPhone’s hard drive, it is a fun little way to burn a few minutes.

Back when I was an impressionable young child, I stumbled across Head Over Heels – a fascinating isometric arcade adventure – that, at my tender age, I had no chance of ever completing. It stuck in my memory for many years though which is why I was so keen to rediscover it on the iPhone.

Translated by the retro experts, Elite Systems, Head Over Heels is a fine conversion. Much like in the case of the Elite Collection, Head Over Heels uses iDaptive controls to ensure maximum flexibility. Players should have no problems with designing a control system that works well for them. A further nod to the rich history of the game comes from a section detailing the plotline as well as the history and great success that the game originally garnered.

But what’s actually involved when playing the game? That’s where the once innovative feature comes into play. Throughout Head Over Heels, players control two characters. Each offer different abilities such as Head’s high jumping ability and Heels fast running speed and ability to carry objects. It makes for an intriguing set of puzzles. Over 300 screens are there to negotiate each with increasingly complex puzzles. Thanks to that focus on cerebral conundrums, the only real thing dated about Head Over Heels is its graphics. Everything else is still just as enjoyable as back in the 1980s.

Both as a history lesson and as a fun adventure game, Head Over Heels succeeds. While its graphics may look dated, the strength of its gameplay more than makes up for this flaw. Either as part of the Elite Collection or separately, Heads Over Heels is keenly priced for the amount of content involved.
