Finding the best apps around…

Believe it or not, I actually really enjoy making these lists every week. It’s like a weird little iOS scavenger hunt. I feel like I’m finding little hidden treasures (and some not-so-hidden) to share with everyone. Makes me feel all special. So yeah, more free games this week. Several of them are pretty cool, too.

Bloody Western – In a world full of custom character-heavy freemium PvP iOS games (and lots of abbreviations), it’s important to have a theme that stands out. I’d say a graphically violent Old West stands out. Bonus points for getting to choose between being a law man or outlaw. Also dusters.

ILLUSIA 2 – I’m not entirely sure why Gamevil always releases cool games for free, but I’m not going to complain. And if they want to make the more refined (and gorgeous) sequel to one of the App Store’s premier RPG-platformers available at no cost, they’re more than welcome to. In fact, I think we should encourage this behavior by downloading it.

Kingdom Age – Build and run a kingdom. Fight rival players. Plenty of quests to complete and areas to explore. All of that’s pretty cool, but what I’m really interested in is the whole fantasy theme. What with all the monsters to fight and 100+ (!) units to command. Could be worth a look-see, I think.

A Bird’s Journey – Okay so I’ll admit it, I’m totally noting this one because of the visuals. I’m a sucker for interesting art styles, everyone should know this by now. Shut up! At least it looks cool. And it’s free.

Downhill Xtreme – Know what this reminds me of? The classic PlayStation title 2 Xtreme. There’s just something incredibly pleasing about beating the crap out of people while racing down steep inclines. Being able to do so while on the go just makes it more awesome.

Avon’s Flight – Yes, it’s another top-down SHMUP. Yes, I know there are a number of these on the App Store already, and a good many of them are free. But how many of them have space-bullets that are affected by gravity? Never mind that it’s technically a ridiculous concept because there really isn’t any gravity in space to begin with, it mixes things up and makes what could’ve been more of the same into something much more unique.

Stuff Magazine Now on iPad

Best-selling gadget magazine Stuff now has an iPad edition. Stuff Magazine, like most iPad magazine apps, is a Newstand app that’s free to download but charges for individual issues and subscriptions.

Stuff Magazine includes the same tests, photography, and expert opinions on the newest tech toys and gadgets, but the iPad edition includes new interactive features that are exclusive to the iPad magazine. The new digital magazine includes hands-on videos, 360-degree photography, Twitter feeds within the magazine, animations, and photo galleries.

Subscribers to the print version of the magazine will also have free access to Stuff Magazine. New subscribers can also just subscribe in the app itself. The prices listed in the app description are in British pounds. But from what I can glean from the top in-app purchases, the magazine costs $ 4.99 (£2.99) for an individual issues, $ 11.99 (£7.99) for three months, $ 19.99 (£13.99) for six months, and $ 33.99 (£23.99) for a year.

Dark Sky Review

Dark Sky Review

By on April 20th, 2012
Our Rating: ★★★★½ :: QUICK
iPhone App – Designed for the iPhone, compatible with the iPad

Dark Sky is a weather app that provides quick data on rain.

Developer: Jackadam
Price: $ 5.99
Version Reviewed: 1.0
Device Reviewed On: iPhone 4 and iPad (third-gen)

iPhone Integration Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
User Interface Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
Re-use / Replay Value Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

While complicated weather apps that present all sorts of data are useful, I don’t want to spend more than a few seconds figuring out what the weather is going to be like before I go out. Most of the time, besides temperature, I just want to know if it’s going to rain. Dark Sky provides a quick at-a-glance view of whether or not it will rain within the next hour and how heavy that rain will be.

I’m not going to spend much time discussing the accuracy of this app. Weather isn’t always perfectly predictable. There are plenty of reviews on nearly every weather app complaining about its accuracy. This particular weather app gets its weather data from NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration). If that service seems trustworthy enough (it has a .gov address), then the accuracy of this app is about as reliable as it can be for weather.

The app is universal, so it looks a bit different on the iPhone and iPad. On the iPhone, the app is displayed in one of three screens (and one of those three is rarely used). The minimalist design with only two screen views makes this app perfect for quick glances. The main screen displays whether it’s raining now or will in the next hour, the current location, and a graph of the “heaviness” of the rain over the next hour. The other screen is a radar that keeps the rainfall graph at the bottom. Switching between the two screens is snappy, making this the perfect at-a-glance app for checking for rain.

While the app only consists of three screens on the iPhone, I was even more impressed by the interface on the iPad – which displayed everything on one screen. The area for precipitation now and in the next hour were at the bottom with the graph of the next hours rainfall directly above it. And most of the screen was taken up by the beautiful black and blue themed radar. Current and bookmarked locations were available at the top for quick switching.

This app is great. Were it free or $ 0.99, I couldn’t see anyone going without it. But at a $ 5.99 price tag, compared to all of the free and $ 1 weather apps, it’s going to be tough to justify spending $ 6 on a weather app. Since it’s universal, it feels a little more like spending $ 3 for each device. Buying Dark Sky will depend on whether or not a user believes it’s worth $ 6 for the beautiful interface, speed, and easy-of-use.

DOFUS: Battles 2 HD Review

DOFUS: Battles 2 HD Review

Our Rating: ★★★½☆ :: NOT A STANDARD SEQUEL
Universal App – Designed for iPhone and iPad

DOFUS: Battles 2 the sequel to popular DOFUS: Battles, a tower defense/RTS/RPG.

Developer: Ankama
Price: $ 4.99

Overall Rating: 3.56 out of 5 stars

Almost a year ago, I reviewed a great game called DOFUS: Battles HD (DOFUS: Battles for iPhone is available as well). DOFUS: Battles HD was an interesting mix between a tower defense, real-time strategy, and an RPG based in the World of Twelve from popular MMORPG, DOFUS. Still today, DOFUS: Battles HD remains my favorite tower defense and one of my favorite games in general on iOS. DOFUS: Battles 2 HD (DOFUS: Battles 2 for iPhone) is the sequel to the hit game and the gameplay in this one has been completely flipped. This time the player is the enemy.

While I wouldn’t choose the sequel over the original in this case, DOFUS: Battles 2 HD provides the unique experience of being the attacker in a tower defense. Jeff Stobbs, the enemy in the previous game, is now the main character. He goes through various levels trying to reach the end of the level by sending minions to take out “towers” – the characters from the old game. Like the original, the minions can be given equipment to make them more powerful and, while those minions can’t level up like characters in the previous game, Jeff Stobbs can and does level up. Leveling Stobbs up increases the variety of summons he can perform, gives him new spells (like healing and shields), and increases the amount of summons he can have out at a time.

Gold is still what’s earned at the end of a level, but, unlike the previous game, the character doesn’t earn the ability to send more minions by destroying the tower characters. Instead, Stobbs has a set limit of how many minions can be out at a time and when they’re destroyed those resources are returned to him. So the strategy is picking how many which minions to attack and the timing of sending those minions out.

I wasn’t happy with the control schemes in DOFUS: Battles 2 HD. Players have to place directional arrows on the grid to make minions turn. This would be fine if the game was a turn-based strategy, but since it’s real-time minions often move too fast to direct them optimally. Also, the control arrows in the mini-games played to unlock new minions weren’t as responsive as most d-pads.

DOFUS: Battles 2 HD simply isn’t as fun as the original. But it’s definitely an interesting take on tower defense games and is worth playing for major fans of the original and, of course, fans of the MMORPG, DOFUS.

MacGuffin’s Curse Review

MacGuffin’s Curse Review

By on April 20th, 2012
Our Rating: ★★★★☆ :: BIG BAD WOLF
Universal App – Designed for iPhone and iPad

Lucas MacGuffin messes up a robbery and in the process receives a nasty curse!

Developer: Ayopa Games

Graphics / Sound Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

Gameplay Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Replay Value Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 3.75 out of 5 stars

MacGuffin’s Curse is a room-based puzzle game viewed from a top-down perspective. Despite a couple of minor control issues, the well-designed levels and ability to turn into a werewolf will keep the player coming back.

Things aren’t going well for Lucas MacGuffin. In need of rent money, he breaks into the local museum and is persuaded to steal a special amulet.

He does, but the second the amulet is removed two things happen – the alarms go off and puts the whole city on lockdown, and the amulet releases a curse that turns Lucas into a werewolf.

This sets off a sequence of events, with the primary goal initially being to get the amulet removed. Each puzzle level requires the player to unlock the exit door in order to progress.

In his normal state Lucas can fit through windows to access blocked areas of the room, and cross shallow water to get to out of reach places.

Stepping into moonlight, however, will give the player the option to turn Lucas into a werewolf. The werewolf can’t cross water, or fit into small gaps, but is much stronger and can move/destroy certain objects in the room.

Using a combination of the two the player must solve the puzzles. It’s not all puzzles though. MacGuffin’s Curse also has a number of story sequences which are well written and humorous.

The only minor complaint I have is that to have the werewolf pull or push a block, the player is required to drag two fingers across the screen. Sometimes this action isn’t recognised (or the two fingers weren’t on the screen at the exact same time).

Apart from that I have no issues recommending MacGuffin’s Curse. Over 150 well-designed levels means the player well definitely get value for money, and the werewolf ability adds a nice twist.

eye saw you Reintroduce Past Encounters

Girls Around Me got some bad press. But the truth is that there’s a market for similar apps without the privacy concerns that arose from Girls Around Me. eye saw you helps users flirt and discover each other without the privacy mess: users remain completely anonymous until they choose to reveal their information.

The idea behind eye saw you are those encounters where people notice each other and don’t exchange much information. They may have just had a quick chat or only saw each other across a room. eye saw you is a platform for users to post what they looked like, what they were wearing, etc., the location and time the encounter took place, and who they’re trying to connect with.

No exchange of information or even pictures need to happen publicly on eye saw you. Users remain absolutely anonymous (besides from the descriptions they post themselves) until they wish to exchange information with someone. This seems like a great alternative to other apps that give off a feeling of stalking and invasion of privacy.

It’s important to encourage communication with any child but it’s all the more vital for those children with an Autistic Spectrum Disorder. Fortunately, technology is on hand to help in some cases. AutisMate is one such app that aims to help boost the social skills of people with autism by helping them communicate better.

AutisMate was designed by Jonathan Izak, someone whose younger brother and first cousin who have autism. It allows users to add their own pictures, videos and voice recordings to the app in order to create scenes that help promote positive interactions.

The app goes one step further by using the iPad’s GPS functionality to provide users with scenes relevant to their current location.

This can all be set up from within the app with over 12,000 included symbols, custom voice recordings and synthesized voices to make it ideal for each child’s needs. It can even be set to use multiple phrases to communicate the same idea in order to promote generalization through variety.

It’s great to see such specialist apps utilizing the potential of the iPad and will hopefully make a huge difference for many families of children on the autistic spectrum.

Topps Bunt Review

Topps Bunt Review

By on April 20th, 2012
Our Rating: ★★★½☆ :: SACRIFICE
iPad Only App – Designed for the iPad

Topps Bunt is an extremely simplified fantasy baseball game.

Developer: Topps
Price: Free
Version Reviewed: 1.01
Device Reviewed On: iPad 2

Graphics / Sound Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
Gameplay Rating: 3 out of 5 stars
Playtime: Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Replay Value Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 3.63 out of 5 stars

Topps Bunt is an extremely simplified fantasy baseball game. Users get a pack of 9 player cards that form their team, and then their performances get points, which accumulate for the user, with the goal being to ultimately try and rise up the leaderboards. Unlike fantasy baseball, there’s not one central pool of players, so one user can’t have a certain player that no one else has. In fact, it’s even possible to have multiples of one card by doing one-to-one trades for cards.

The game’s structure means that it’s not particularly skill-based; getting a good draw with the initial pack of cards and then hopefully finding some willing trade partners appears to be the ultimate key to success, as well as not getting players who wind up being in the minor leagues. I would like if the Oakland A’s would call Brad Peacock up to the majors because otherwise he’s languishing on my roster doing nothing. And there’s really nothing that I can do about it because I can only get rid of him via trade, and who’s rightfully going to trade for him?

Topps Bunt is a unicorn in the world of the App Store though, in that it’s completely free. Not “free with in-app purchases” but free. Just try and spend money in this game – it’s not possible! It’s actually kind of refreshing. Don’t worry that much about getting a late start on the season, as leaderboards tracking from when the user starts playing the game are available. The interface is nicely attuned for the iPad, and the player cards are designed to give the game a consistently crisp feel to go along with the user avatar artwork of the game. Who says bears can’t play fantasy baseball? The whole list of players is also available, and viewable as a card sheet; each card has amusing anecdotes about players to go along with their photo and recent stats.

Ultimately, Topps Bunt won’t satisfy those looking for a deep fantasy baseball experience; this is more for a casual player who just wants to get some players and check in occasionally, or for children who like baseball and want to browse cards of the various players.
