FDG Entertainment, developer of popular sniping stickman game, Clear Vision (17+), has just released the first screenshots for the update of its shooting game.

The 1.1 update to Clear Vision (17+) will continue the story with Tyler, the average guy gone assassin. FDG entertainment promises lots of blood and cutscenes in the new update (which will be free to owners of the full version of the app).

The screenshots depict some stickmen outside of somewhere called Club Lay-M, a sniper shot of someone being held at gunpoint, and an artsy shot of the shadow of a stickman holding a silenced pistol. While the screenshots don’t reveal much of what’s going to happen in the update, they’re still fun teasers to the extended story of Tyler coming soon (early June).

Clear Vision (17+) was based on a Flash game by DPFLASHES Studios. The follows Tyler through a violent, cartoony story with plenty of assassinations, blood, and cutscenes. The game is universal and is selling for only $ 0.99.

Fat Kid Ninja Review

Fat Kid Ninja Review

By on May 17th, 2012
Our Rating: ★★★½☆ :: FIGHT THE VEGETABLES
iPhone App – Designed for the iPhone, compatible with the iPad

Fat Kid Ninja is a casual game in which players defend themselves from evil attacking vegetables.

Developer: Liquid Generation
Price: $ 0.99
Version Reviewed: 1.0
Device Reviewed On: iPad 2

Graphics / Sound Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
Game Controls Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
Gameplay Rating: 3 out of 5 stars
Replay Value Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 3.25 out of 5 stars

Hate eating vegetables? Then playing Fat Kid Ninja will be appealing since it is all about killing some hostile and evil vegetables. The game lacks the depth of some other casual games, but it’s great for killing a few minutes. It’s apparent that the developers have tried to make a light-hearted and funny game.

The game consists of fat, dorky-looking kid standing in the center of the screen with a sword and ninja stars. Tapping the screen will throw ninja stars in the direction of the where the screen was tapped and swiping causes fat kid ninja to swing his sword. Evil vegetables attack for all sides and try to hit the kid. Some of the vegetables include corn, carrots, eggplants, and pea pods, which shoot peas.

The left side of the screen has icons for four unique special attacks, such as lightning attack that destroys all of the vegetables on the screen, and 360 degree slice. The four special attacks all look different and are good additions to the game play.

A downside to this game is that the gameplay gets monotonous after a while. It is very good for a few killing a few minutes, but playing it for prolonged periods of time will probably get boring. The special attacks do offer some variation in the game play, but it’s definitely a casual game that won’t keep a player’s attention for more than an hour.

The game has a very good tutorial, which shows the different ways to fight the vegetables, and demonstrates the special attacks. The app integrates with game center and has achievements. Also, a nice feature is the ability to view the funny and well-drawn animated cut scenes from the main menu.

Overall Fat Kid Ninja is a good casual game. It lacks depth and can get repetitive, but is perfect for killing a few minutes. The controls are easy to learn and the special attacks offer a nice twist. Anybody who hates eating his or her vegetables should consider giving it a try.

The iPad is increasingly becoming a must-have tool for professional and amateur musicians alike. The sheer amount of accessories and tools that can be connected to the iPad for music is amazing. The Carbon 49 by Samson is another one of those musical iPad accessories.

The Carbon 49 is a USB MIDI controller designed with the iPad in mind. The MIDI controller has an iPad slot to hold the iPad and it works with almost any iPad synth or music app that supports MIDI. The Carbon 49 can even be powered by the iPad itself for those musicians that need increased mobility and less wiring to worry about. The controller has 49 velocity-sensitive keys, Transpose and Octave buttons, Pitch Bend and Modulation wheels, 14 adjustable performance-related parameters, and a 3-digit, 7-segment LCD screen that displays the controllers behavior.

Since it’s a ‘USB’ MIDI controller, iPad users will also need the iPad Camera Connection Kit to give the iPad a USB slot to hook the Carbon 49 into. The Carbon 49 is selling at various online retailers (like J&R) at $ 89.99.

What happens when a location-based service like Foursquare and a radio streaming services like Pandora are mashed together? We end up with something like WahWah.FM. WahWah.FM, a German-based start-up, is a music service that lets users create their own radio stations by picking music on their own iPhones and simultaneously listening and streaming those songs to anyone else who’d like to listen.

Unlike Pandora and other services that may use algorithms and recommendations to pick songs for stations, every user is their own DJ and can choose which songs they will listen to and broadcast to their listeners. Users can tune into to other users all over to world to check out what they’re listening to. Stations can be posted to Facebook to let friends know that music is being broadcasted. And there are even ways to interact with the listens to the stations each user has created.

WahWah.FM is a free service and is now available on the App Store. Check it out and start streaming.

Shiver: Vanishing Hitchhiker Review

Shiver: Vanishing Hitchhiker Review

By on May 17th, 2012
Our Rating: ★★★½☆ :: SPOOKY ADVENTURE
iPad Only App – Designed for the iPad

One of the more enjoyable casual adventure games of recent times.

Developer: Big Fish Games
Price: FREE (with $ 6.99 in-app purchase to unlock further features)
Version Reviewed: 1.0.1
Device Reviewed On: iPad 2

Graphics / Sound Rating: 3.75 out of 5 stars
Game Controls Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
Gameplay Rating: 3.75 out of 5 stars
Replay Value Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

Shiver: Vanishing Hitchhiker isn’t the longest of casual adventure games but what is there is quite fun. It’s not even immediately essential to purchase the Collector’s Edition side of the app, although keen players may feel tempted.

As with so many of Big Fish Games’s recent releases, Shiver: Vanishing Hitchhiker is all about solving a mystery. A hitchhiker has vanished and the player must track them down through some very creepy looking locations. While never actually scary, there’s a sinister edge to proceedings. Many of the scenes might be a little cliched (creepy playroom, anyone?) but they do make for some great puzzles.

None of these puzzles will tax hugely, admittedly, but they will involve multiple steps. This isn’t a game solely focused on Hidden Object searching. There are sections that require it but, frequently, they also involve solving mini-puzzles within. It all comes together to solve a bigger conundrum such as in one memorable chapter in which players have to recreate ghostly images. It’s quite engrossing stuff and makes a change from the very passive experience of picking out hidden objects.

The storyline, while simple, is similarly intriguing and takes a few twists and turns.

For those in need of an extra helping hand, they can always purchase the Collector’s Edition for a strategy guide and extra mode of play, but I wouldn’t consider it vital until first completing the game.

The only real niggles come from it being occasionally awkward to navigate the rooms and step backwards to the previous room. Other than that, it’s pretty satisfying.

Shiver: Vanishing Hitchhiker isn’t going to be a game that taxes old hands at the adventure gaming genre, but it is a decent example of what publisher Big Fish Games can offer. It’ll only take around 3-4 hours to complete but it’s a fun experience with the option of two difficulty levels, affecting play.

On The Grid! Review

On The Grid! Review

iPhone App – Designed for the iPhone, compatible with the iPad

Finding the right paths is key in this twisting puzzle game.

Developer: Jeffrey Monte

Graphics / Sound Rating: 2.75 out of 5 stars

It’s becoming more apparent that the touch screen is secretly one of the best things to ever happen to puzzle games. With a whole new input at their disposal, developers have been able to come up with loads of new and interesting hooks for their puzzle creations. On the Grid! may not have much going on for it beyond its touch-heavy puzzle hook but it’s a good hook nonetheless.

On the Grid! is a number-based puzzle game vaguely in the Sudoku vein. Each grid/board is filled with pairs of numbers and the player’s job is to draw lines connecting each pair. There are a few catches though. Obviously, the paths must not cross. Furthermore, together, the paths must fill up the whole board. It’s not a particularly hard game as some boards can be beaten as fast as the player can connect the dots, although the controls cannot always keep up. However, seeing as boards can often be “beaten” without filling them completely, the requirement is an odd, occasional stumbling point. Overall, it’s a lot to account for at once and it’s ultimately the kind of game where if one makes a mistake early on the whole solution must be totally redone. Still, discovering the usually roundabout answers is satisfying in a classic puzzle way.

There really isn’t much else to it besides that. The graphics and sound are a bit basic and bland but presentational flair isn’t what most people expect from simple, little brain teasers. Players have the option to buy extra levels but there are plenty of free ones included ranging from 3-pair training boards to 10-pair challenges. Finally, it’s got the obligatory achievement and leader board support.

It seems like everyone has an idea for a puzzle game these days and with the App Store everyone now has the opportunity to share those ideas. On the Grid! is a good idea that is worth sharing though. Just know there isn’t much to it besides that good idea.

The board game of Monopoly is an impressive 112 years old. That means plenty of time for multiple different varieties of the game. Vying away from the likes of Simpsons, Lord of The Rings and World Cup soccer editions, now there’s a new and technologically advanced variety in the form of Monopoly zAPPed.

Monopoly zAPPed relies upon special credit cards that can be scanned with an iOS device. Keeping up with the 21st century focus on using plastic rather than cash to spend, these devices automatically transfer funds between players’ accounts once swiped. A selection of mini games also stem from the app which can help players escape jail and jail fines.

It all makes for a fun twist on the traditional Monopoly experience and is bound to keep fans happy.

The app is available now and is free to download. Although, bear in mind that the Monopoly zAPPed board game is required to use it fully.

Mr. Reader for iPad Review

Mr. Reader for iPad Review

Our Rating: ★★★★½ :: REALLY SWIFT SERVICE
iPad Only App – Designed for the iPad

Given up on RSS readers on the iPad? You won’t once you give Mr. Reader a go.

Developer: Oliver Fuerniss
Price: $ 3.99
Version Reviewed: 1.8
Device Reviewed On: iPad

iPad Integration Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
User Interface Rating: 4.65 out of 5 stars
Re-use Value Rating: 5 out of 5 stars
Overall Rating: 4.72 out of 5 stars

I gave up on traditional RSS readers on the iPad quite a while ago. I’ve tried multiple, multiple variants – from those that emulate a traditional newspaper to those that are a bare-bones translation of the Google Reader experience. Nothing impressed me, so I surrendered reading my rather sizable Google Reader feeds except for occasional glaces at them via Pulse or Flipboard or some other app out there. But I missed many, many articles this way – though I resigned myself to the fact that, unfortunately, this was my only option.

Not anymore. Not since I met Mr. Reader.

A quick glance at Mr. Reader is deceiving. Sure, it may briefly LOOK like any of a dozen other RSS readers on the App Store right now, but looks are only screen deep. Mr. Reader has a collection of features that is unrivaled, but it’t not really the features that sold me on the app. It’s the speed!

Yep. Mr. Reader is FAST. Amazingly fast, in fact. It takes only a matter of seconds to load thousands of articles. Gone are the days of waiting countless minutes (or longer, particularly if the app crashes or locks during the process) while an app catalogues and lists all of the articles available. I didn’t think I could be impressed by an app’s speed until I experienced Mr. Reader loading almost 10,000 (!!!) articles in just a few moments. It’s one of those astonishing moments that rarely occurs for someone who has seen as many apps as I have.

Mr. Reader is more than just speed, however. Every article can be read in its original RSS form, as a traditional web page, or via Instapaper, Readability or Read It Later (now Pocket – but the name has not been updated within the app) mobilizers. These mobilizers are available from the top of the page with just a quick click, and, again, there’s little to no wait time as the full article is rendered. Mr. Reader also includes a large number of services that can work in tandem with the app – everything from the already-mentioned Instapaper and Readability to more obscure choices like Buffer, Things, Pinboard and OmniFocus. There’s also a large degree of customization available within the app, including visual themes that can be changed (and updated via a “Download New Themes” link). Plus (and this is a big plus), it’s easy to manage feeds from within Mr. Reader.

The bottom line is, while there are many apps that have bits and pieces of what Mr. Reader has to offer, none have the features and, most importantly, the speed of this app. Anyone who reads RSS feeds, or (like me) misses having ready and quick access to Google Reader news on the iPad, needs to buy this app. It won’t keep you waiting.
