ChickenBreak is an endless running game where players take control of a chicken and guide it in an attempt to escape from the maximum security prison where it is being held captive. Here, the phrase “maximum security” is no joke either. Falling bombs, homing missiles, traps, pits, swinging saws, giant spiked balls, and so many other dangers all wait to stop the chicken from escaping. It’s up to the player to help the chicken jump, duck, slide, bat away and otherwise avoid all these contraptions, and they do so with the help of some inventive controls.

In ChickenBreak, unlike many other endless running games, there are no fixed buttons on the screen, and yet the chicken must execute various different actions to avoid obstacles. This isn’t the kind of game where all that is needed to advance is a series of well timed jumps. In order to allow the player to control the chicken in many different ways while keeping the screen clear of a jumble of buttons, the developer presents the player with adaptive controls for some actions such as jumping and sliding that will only appear when needed. There are also tapping and swiping actions that the player can use, for example to collect coins and power ups or to repel homing missiles.

Coins are used to upgrade the chicken’s abilities and make it easier for him to last longer, and the upgrade system rewards players for playing more. The chicken and its many adversaries are all very well animated; expressive and interesting. The gameplay is fast-paced and challenging but well balanced by power ups and upgrades that allow the player to reach new levels. While there are many of these type of games in the App Store, it’s refreshing to find one that takes a slightly different approach to controls and tries some unique mechanics instead of just mimicking what’s been done before.

This week at 148Apps.com, Kevin Stout examined the question more than a few of us are asking: Why won’t Nintendo release any games for iOS? Stout writes, “Nintendo recently reported its first annual loss, showing that perhaps 3DS isn’t enough of a success. Nintendo hasn’t even released its legacy games on mobile platforms where others like Sega have (Sonic the Hedgehog). While current CEO of Nintendo, Satoru Iwata, is in charge, it’s unlikely that Nintendo will acknowledge its mistake. When asked about releasing Nintendo games for smartphones, Iwata replied, “This is absolutely not under consideration. If we did this, Nintendo would cease to be Nintendo….”’

Meanwhile, Amy Solomon at GiggleApps took a look at a new Marvel Avengers app for kids: Avengers Origins: Assemble! is a very enjoyable universal interactive storybook that tells the tale of how The Avengers became a cohesive group after meeting Captain America. I really enjoy how these characters are introduced, making this a great primer for children new to Marvel comics. Interactive moments are included throughout that children will also enjoy such as dragging the tools used by each Avenger to their rightful owner.”

Last, but certainly not least, 148Apps.biz writer Carter Dotson reported on results from a recent MocoSpace study: “MocoSpace has announced the results of their new “Y U Play?” study that tries to answer the question of just why people play mobile games, anyway? The answer for the majority of people appears to be just pure entertainment. 34% of people like to play mobile games because “the games are fun,” and 32% do it because they are bored, or want to kill time.”

Time to Check Out Classic-Style RPG Alphadia

The Japanese developer KEMCO has been developing iOS games for some time; most of them bring epic RPGs (some might call them JRPGs) in the classic 16-bit style. Alphadia, one of their more popular titles, is described by the developer as a classic Japanese style role playing game. It follows the adventures of the small town resident and young hero, Ash, after he and a friend rescue a mysterious girl from foreign soldiers and escape into the woods. It’s up to Ash and the friends he makes on his new quest to help this girl complete a secret mission that will bring peace to the land again.

The game employs a very traditional turn-based battle system and boasts a substantial plot with over 30 hours of gameplay. Along with the rest of the game, the high-res graphics are also very reminiscent of those old console RPG classics. Just one look at the game and gamers will feel transported back to the days of the great SNES and Sega RPG titles.

Kemco has also just announced a sale on Alphadia reducing the price from $ 6.99 to $ 0.99. So far there has been no mention of when that sale will end so players looking for a good chunk of game for cheap might want to check it out.

Mega Tic-Tac-Toe Review

Mega Tic-Tac-Toe Review

By on May 18th, 2012
Our Rating: ★★★½☆ :: AN EXPANDED CLASSIC
Universal App – Designed for iPhone and iPad

It’s like tic-tac-toe, but more of it.

Developer: Noam Studios

Price: Free
Version Reviewed: 2.1.2
Device Reviewed On: iPhone 4S

Graphics / Sound Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

Gameplay Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

Tic-tac-toe. Whether it’s from the classic pen and paper version of the game or from the game show of arguable popularity that is based on it, everyone is familiar with this tried and true staple of those seeking a few minutes refuge from boredom. In many ways, Mega Tic-Tac-Toe shares many of the traits of it’s analog predecessor: It looks very similar, it can be played alone or with a friend, and it has very simple rules. Still, this game is much more than just a digital way of doing what one could easily draw out on a paper.

In Mega Tic-Tac-Toe, players play with the standard “X” or “O”, but they aren’t playing to get the usualy three in a row. In this game, players are playing to get five in a row. Furthermore, they aren’t constrained by the classic 3×3 grid. Players can place their marks anywhere they want on an infinitely large grid as long as it is adjacent to an already existing mark. This means that depending on the skill of the player (or players), game can last much longer than just a few seconds.

Mega Tic-Tac-Toe offers several modes, making it a versatile little app. There is a one player mode where the player can face off against a tic-tac-toe AI with what is supposed to be five different levels of difficulty. Strangely, there doesn’t seem to be much variation in the different levels of AI difficulty because every level plays like a tic-tac-toe Grand Master. Fortunately, there are also pass-and-play modes for two players and even an unlockable (in the game’s full paid version) online play mode that connects players through Game Center to go head to head in tic-tac-toe matches.

While this game isn’t the most visually stunning to be found in the App Store, everything works well and the gameplay is exactly what one would expect from a tic-tac-toe game. Mega Tic-Tac-Toe is free to download and is ad supported, but players can only unlock advanced game modes and online play by purchasing the full version with no ads for $ 0.99.

TockDown Review

TockDown Review

By on May 18th, 2012
Our Rating: ★★★★½ :: USEFUL
iPad Only App – Designed for the iPad

TockDown is a timer app for the iPad.

Developer: Retrobit
Price: $ 0.99
Version Reviewed: 1.0
Device Reviewed On: iPad (third-generation)

iPhone/iPad Integration Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
User Interface Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
Re-use / Replay Value Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

The iPad doesn’t have a native Clocks app like the iPhone. Until Apple decides to give us iPad users the app, we’re stuck finding alternatives to the functions we’ve grown used to on the iPad. TockDown performs one, but definitely not all, of the functions the Clocks app performs, timers.

The app is simple enough. There’s a large timer on the only screen the app has with two digits for minutes and two for seconds. There are also three buttons: start/pause, set, and timers. Start/pause is obvious. Set shows a popup menu of numbers to set the timer. And timers shows favorite and recently used times.

Of all of the features, I’m happiest with the timer button. Recently used times can quickly be added to favorites by tapping the star. A star is above every time in the menu, so favorites can be removed as quickly as they can be added. Another favorite feature of mine is the fact that the timer starts to count up (in red numbers) once the timer has finished. Users who missed their timers can quickly see how long over they’ve gone (since the ringing stops at after about 8 seconds).

I found a cool use for the app with the Apple TV. I play poker with my friends every week, so I tried displaying the timer on my TV to mark the end of rounds. It worked well, but the audio came through my iPad, not the TV. It’s a minor thing, but for my own personal use I wouldn’t mind an update so I can use the ticking sound on my TV (since it’s such a nice, clear ticking sound).

The feature that bothered me was the setting the timers. When the timer is being set, the digits being entered go to the minutes digits instead of the seconds. This would be fine if it wasn’t so buggy because of it. If, for example, I wanted to make a 35 minute timer, one would think that I could simply fill in the first two digits as 3 and 5 and hit start or tap away from the numbers pop-up menu. Unfortunately, the timer clears if the user taps away from the menu and switches to the other two digits (seconds) if the user hits the start button (even though it fills in the minutes digits at first). So in order to set a 35 minute timer, users have to hit “set” then 3, 5, 0, 0. No, it isn’t that inconvenient, but it could’ve been done better.

Overall, TockDown provides a simple and clean timer app for the iPad – something that it sorely needs. For what it is, it’s nearly perfect. Add some more backgrounds other than wood and maybe some customizable sounds and this would be 5 star app.

Why Can’t I Play Pokemon On My iPhone?

Nintendo recently reported its first annual loss, showing that perhaps 3DS isn’t enough of a success. If we did this, Nintendo would cease to be Nintendo….”

But what about rereleasing classics on iOS? That doesn’t seem to conflict with Iwata’s unflinching desire to keep Nintendo from making easy money. Let’s take a look at some numbers to estimate those releases.

The following data about Nintendo platforms and games are from VGChartz.

  • The Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) sold 500.01 million units globally.
  • Super Mario Bros. sold 40.24 million units.
  • The original Game Boy sold 501.11 million units.
  • Pokemon (including the Red, Green, Blue, and Yellow versions) sold 46.01 million units.

Now let’s look at some iOS comparisons.

  • Apple has recently updated the lifetime sales number for iOS devices at 365 million units, 67 million of which are iPads.
  • Recent success Draw Something was downloaded over 50 million times in the first 50 days of being released.

Downloads of some popular iOS games, like Angry Birds, Draw Something, and more, have overtaken lifetime sales of the most popular NES and Gameboy games despite less of the originating devices existing. iOS users are willing to pay for the games that they want.

8% of NES users owned Super Mario Bros. (40.24 million copies of the game out of 500.01 million users). If only 4% of iOS users purchases a Super Mario Bros. port to iOS, half of the NES sales units for the game, Nintendo could potentially make $ 14M in profits. That assumes the game is sold at $ 0.99. But who honestly wouldn’t pay up to $ 5 to play Super Mario Bros. (or Zelda titles) on the iPhone or iPad?

What about Game Boy games? Just a few months ago, Pokemon Yellow appeared on the App Store for a weekend. The app was not Pokemon Yellow. The game didn’t work. And despite over 1000 one-star reviews, people continued to download it. The game reached #3 in the Top Paid Apps on the App Store in an incredibly short time. The original Pokemon titles sold even more than Super Mario Bros.. It also may be more profitable considering it would be a great candidate for an in-app purchase scheme (in-game currency, collectable digital items and Pokemon, etc).

There are plenty of Zelda and Mario-like games on the App Store, but a game that truly mimics the experience and gameplay of Pokemon has yet to be accomplished. But one may be coming out soon. Stephen McVicker and Calisprojects are developing an ambitious, Pokemon-like game called ZENFORMS that’s slated to be released in June.

Even if Nintendo releases Pokemon after ZENFORMS is released, it isn’t going to cut into Nintendo’s sales. But it’s unusual that Nintendo is refusing fans old games that would cost Nintendo nearly nothing to release. There’s a demand out there for Nintendo-style classics and Nintendo is losing out.

Rage Comic Generator Review

Rage Comic Generator Review

Universal App – Designed for iPhone and iPad

A fun way to create your own RageGuy memes.

Developer: Antonio Caballero
Price: $ 0.99

iPhone Integration Rating: 3.75 out of 5 stars
User Interface Rating: 3.75 out of 5 stars
Re-use Value Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 3.67 out of 5 stars

For regular internet users, memes are quite fun to dabble in. Any visitor to an internet forum or chatroom will have seen many images linked that range from a rabbit with a pancake on its head to Heath Ledger’s Joker questioning ‘Why so serious?’. It’s all pretty light hearted and a fun way of getting a point across without always using text. One such popular meme is that of the RageGuy,a very angry character whose life clearly doesn’t go very well. Many examples are already out there of comic strips made of his frustrations but how about making new ones? Rage Comic Generator provides the means and it’s pretty easy to create some fun cartoons.

Loading up the app presents users with a choice of size and number of panels. That’s almost as complicated as it gets, as everything else is a bit more obvious and user friendly. A huge number of meme images are already included, 240 in all, which should account for all tastes and situations, even if I did find myself leaning towards basic RageGuy.

Options are then available for adding drawn images and text to each panel. Other basic editing features such as the option to enlarge images, rotate them or even flip them, keep things simple yet effective.

It’d be easy to spend a very long time creating comics from Rage Comic Generator. At first, it’ll look like the depth of the app isn’t great but the sheer number of memes open up the possibilities hugely. Instead, it begins to feel almost overwhelming and a template feature would have been useful.

Users will want to spend time perfecting their creations also as it’s easy to share the content. E-mail and Twitter use is there, as we’d expect from any app these days. What’s pretty cool though is the option to submit to Reddit from within the app. It’s a great way to share content with a wider audience.

I felt more comfortable using Rage Comic Generator on an iPad rather than an iPhone, purely because of the screen space, but it still works effectively on the iPhone. The Universal nature of the app makes the choice easy for multiple iOS devices users anyhow.

For the minuscule price, Rage Comic Generator is an excellent tool for regular internet users to communicate their feelings and maybe once in a while vent their rage.

Free games again? Man, I’m really starting to get tired of–who am I kidding? Games! For free! Isn’t that awesome?? This week we’re a little all over the place with genres and content. Something for almost everybody, and it’s all free.

The Sandbox – Come on now, this one shouldn’t come as a surprise. It’s a shockingly impressive sandbox (har-har) game that allows players to grow their own environments, and even simple machinery, or destroy it as they see fit. Lots of elements to unlock that play off of each other in interesting ways and a virtually limitless potential for creation make it a must-have even without accounting for the whole being free thing.

Circus Atari Review

A modern day re-interpretation of a classic arcade game.

Developer: Atari
Price: $ 0.99
Version Reviewed: 1.0
Device Reviewed On: iPhone 4

Graphics / Sound Rating: 3.75 out of 5 stars
Game Controls Rating: 3.75 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 3.38 out of 5 stars

Don’t get too excited Atari fans, Circus Atari may have the same name as the beloved arcade game of the 1970s but the resemblances very nearly stop there.

While Circus at the arcade was like Breakout but with a clown twist, Circus Atari is more like Doodle Jump with balloons.

Players take the role of a pretty fearless clown who gets launched from a cannon and must be guided ever higher to gain more points. Popping balloons by flying into them hurls the clown higher and helps direct it into coins which can be used to buy bonus nets. These nets can then be used to fling the clown back upwards once he’s lost momentum. Barrels and springboards further add to the ability to fly upwards even faster, bypassing the need for balloons at times.

It’s a pretty simple game mechanic with the sole control method being tilt based. Tilting is fairly responsive although I found once I unlocked an achievement, things got very laggy for a while. In a game so focused on speed and quick reactions, this immediately puts the player at a disadvantage.

Circus Atari is reasonably fun for a time as it’s satisfying to pop a path to the best line of coins or the trickle of power-ups that are offered. It does suffer from a lack of focus and direction though. Some challenges or objectives could have helped a lot here as, without them, things become a little pointless.

Ironically, if Circus Atari had been like the original arcade game, this wouldn’t have been the case. The arcade game offered a point to proceedings unlike here.

As a free to play game, the lack of structure isn’t such a big problem, fortunately, but it does make the urge to buy extra nets with real money less so. Circus Atari is a game that players may find themselves enjoying for a brief while but it’s doubtful that Doodle Jump and Tiny Wings will lose their position as the most enjoyable endless runners of this sort.
