BeyondDead, while not always as intuitive as some gamers might prefer, is a rich gaming experience that does reasonably well at bringing the much lauded “Metroid-vania” style of adventure game to the iOS. These types of game are generally characterized by sprawling maze-like maps, upgradable player abilities and weapons, and puzzle elements all focused on a balance between combat and exploration. Unfortunately, such games have largely been missing from the iOS platform for various reasons and it’s refreshing to have an ambitious developer give it a go despite the difficulty of fitting such a complex game on the platform.

BeyondDead chronicles the adventures of Tank, a heavily armored space marine type, who is sent on a mission to discover the fate of an asteroid mining facility that has suffered a catastrophic accident. On his adventures he’ll have to fight through reanimated facility staff zombies and other abominations in search of the truth. As they play, players will upgrade Tanks weapons and abilities in order to reach more remote and hidden parts of the game’s map and to defeat more formidable enemies. True to the “Metroid-vania” game style, Tank will also encounter large boss fights periodically throughout the game.

The environments in BeyondDead are moody and successfully evoke an eerie loneliness, even if some portions are a bit simplistic in their execution. The game’s story is also intriguing; when it unfolds. To the game’s detriment however, much of the story is buried in text heavy exposition between Tank and his companion, Vera. Sometimes these will only be initiated if the player activates their comm system, and otherwise could be missed. The game’s controls also make it difficult to really enjoy the game. Hang ups from inadvertent falls, bumps, and shifts in direction can make navigating the large map as well as combat very cumbersome at times, and in a game where the player will traverse the map several times over and fight lots of enemies, that is no small issue.

While it can be clunky at times, BeyondDead is an ambitious title and is fairly well executed. Players that are willing to work through some frustration with navigation they will find a game rich in mysteries and gameplay. The sheer audacity this game shows by aiming to bring such an experience to an iPhone should certainly be awarded with some well earned interest from iOS gamers looking for something new.

Our Rating: ★★★★☆ :: SO PRETTY
Universal App – Designed for iPhone and iPad

Sure Crimsonheart is another contender for “Action RPG that’s like most other Action RPGs on the App Store” from a virtual unknown, but it’s a surprisingly solid attempt with some really impressive visuals.

Developer: ANBSoft
Price: $ 0.99

User Interface Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

Humans and demons are at war, and their arbiters (dragons) have settled down for a 200 year nap. Things ain’t looking so good, but we can always count on a few chosen heroes to set things right in a world full of conflict. So yeah, Crimsonheart probably doesn’t feature the most groundbreaking RPG story of all time, but it keeps things moving. And it’s when things get moving that the game well and truly shines.

Crimsonheart could be considered an almost by-the-numbers App Store Action RPG. It’s got the same emphasis on fetch quests (gather 10 of something, then gather 5 of something, and so on), the same top-down perspective, and the same focus on mashing the attack and special skill buttons while murdering various beasties. Most of it’s been done before, but there are more than a few key differences that help to make it feel special. As in really special, not “good effort” special.

The most immediately obvious trait Crimsonheart has going for it are the visuals. To an extent they might appear a little rougher than other titles, but they have some spectacular designs and very fluid animations. I’ve played other, more popular ARPGs on my iPhone that don’t even come close to it. I’m also a fan of the card system, which lets players gather cards from monsters that can be fused to their equipment for bonus effects or combine two cards to potentially make even stronger ones. And this is in addition to the crafting and enchanting. Last and most interesting is the ability to utilize an AI partner. After a certain point in the story players will get a buddy who they can both switch to with the press of a button and set custom AI commands to dictate their actions. I have to say, it works pretty friggin’ well, too.

While the story is a bit uninspired, the real problem is the text. The writing is okay overall but the text itself doesn’t wrap properly, leading to some words being cut-off randomly and continued on the next line. I’m also not a fan of the way I tend to get stuck in a combo while facing the wrong direction. And as much as I enjoy the special online features (daily arena challenges and dungeons, the ability to earn special items, events, super high-level epic boss fights with other players, etc…) none of it is explained clearly. Players are just sort of expected to hop online and know what to do. It leads to a lot of trial-and-error, perhaps a little wasted cash, and more than a few insta-deaths.

And yet, despite my irritation at the slightly clumsy combat and the somewhat broken exposition, I find myself totally in love with Crimsonheart. It does just enough differently to feel unique, and it’s a joy to look at. Oh, and it’s fun.

Universal App – Designed for iPhone and iPad

Master the motorcycle is this physics-heavy racer.

Developer: Robert Saxton
Price: $ 0.99

Graphics / Sound Rating: 2.75 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 3.63 out of 5 stars

What’s nice about video games is that they remove those pesky physics that, in the real world, make tasks like jumping over obstacles–or, say, doing tricks on a motorcycle–quite difficult. GnarBike Pro is not that kind of video game. However, its punishing, physics-heavy gameplay is pretty much the only reason why it’s fun.

GnarBike Pro puts players in control of a motorcycle and tasks them not with racing with others through a course but simply surviving said course. Responsive touch buttons control both the acceleration of the bike and the way the rider leans. Balance the bike and rider properly and one will make to the finish line. Fail and the rider will end up an upside-down rag doll impaled by a rail or crushed by his own bike. The amount of subtle, analog control one has over the bike is very satisfying.

However, with that great power comes the great responsibility of navigating the bike through the difficult and numerous free, pro, and user-created levels. At least the free levels have a generous amount of checkpoints. Much of the difficulty comes from the fact that the best strategy is knowing when to be risky as neither overly-cautious nor overly-daring racing will succeed. Plus, the high level of control makes the player feel that failures are their own doing, not the game’s.

Unfortunately, the game does not have that much going for it outside of its well-tuned gameplay. The graphics, music and sound effects are all thoroughly uninspired. There’s a level editor but since everything takes place in a boring warehouse it’s not too exciting. The game is packed with content and the medal system encourages one to beat levels faster. It’s just a shame that the presentation is not as inviting.

GnarBike Pro impressively, and almost inadvertently, does a great job of giving the player the feeling of having a person’s very life in their hands. If one can get past the bland aesthetics they will find a game with a hook well worth trying to master.

Our Rating: ★★★½☆ :: SHORT BUT SWEET
Universal App – Designed for iPhone and iPad

Rocks. Papers. Scissors. Tile-swapping puzzles. Luchador masks? Well now, things are certainly getting interesting.

Developer: Continuous Integration, Inc.
Price: FREE
Version: 1.0
App Reviewed on: iPhone 3GS

Graphics / Sound Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Gameplay Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Playtime Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 3.63 out of 5 stars

I wonder, is there a culture out there in the world somewhere that doesn’t have something similar to Rocks, Paper, Scissors? I’m not entirely sure. Granted, I’m sure they aren’t all about stones, reconstituted tree pulp and sharp things, but it’s still a very universal concept. And as a universal concept, it should be pretty easy for anyone to come to grips with RPS Rumble‘s core mechanics. Chances are good they’ll get a good laugh out of the colorful Mexican wrestling motif, too.

The general idea of RPS Rumble is to cover, crush, and cut each tile until only one remains. Things are a bit dressed-up with colorful graphics and goofy Luchador masks for each of the three “elements,” but the core gameplay is very straightforward. Such a simple concept but oh my goodness does it get tough. Even the mid-level stages had me scratching my head and restarting constantly, and there are still two more difficulties above that.

Maybe it’s just because I have something of an offbeat sense of humor, but slapping Mexican wrestling masks on the game pieces is very funny to me. I also love the expressions they make, which are both humorous and useful. Selecting a rock will make any scissors it can jump to grimace, which is a clever indicator of which moves are “legal.” I also have to say I’m impressed with just how excruciatingly difficult the later puzzles can get. Even with this somewhat limited freemium build it’s possible to get a few solid hours of beatdowns in. Having multiple solutions to each puzzle also encourages a few replays when the mood strikes.

The only real problem with RPS Rumble is that there aren’t a whole lot of puzzles to play around with. Not initially, anyway. After an in-app purchase or two (individual level packs can be bought or everything can be unlocked for $ 2.99) the number climbs exponentially, but a small fraction of those 140 puzzles are all that are available for free. I’m not saying it should all be free, because that would sort of go against the idea of actually earning money, but I feel like having just a few more would be nice. Heck, even if 20 of them were open from the start (double the current amount) there would still be another 120 to go.

Mileage will vary depending on an individual’s tenacity and puzzle-solving ability, but RPS Rumble will inevitably reach a point where there’s nothing left to do without spending some money. It’s certainly fun enough that I’d encourage taking The Plunge, but as a free-to-play experience, even an ad-free one, it feels a bit too short. It’s definitely a good time while it lasts, though.

Find Interesting People Nearby with Glancee

Some social networking apps are designed to bring people from faraway lands together. Glancee can do that too, but it’s also designed to try and bring people nearby together, slaying that most heinous of demons once and for all: the awkwardness that comes from trying to meet other people.

Users log in with Facebook, then start trying to find people with interests similar to them. Profiles are automatically filled out by Facebook information, including likes, which helps to cull together a list of other users that may be compatible based on shared interests. Matching attempts to base compatible interests on similar subjects, like sports teams, and not just scanning and saying “these two people like these exact same things on Facebook!” This does tend to fall apart at times, though – there are reasons why a fan of football player Michael Crabtree might not be compatible with a fan of the Texas Longhorns and Colt McCoy.

Once a match is found, users can then chat with each other. The app finds people by proximity, and on the iPhone, it can use GPS in the background to help alert when compatible people are nearby, helping to break the ice. Glancee is available now as a free download.

The Clique Review

The Clique Review

iPhone App – Designed for the iPhone, compatible with the iPad

A great way of crowd sourcing recommendations via friends on Facebook, but make sure to get plenty of friends using the app for maximum success.

The Clique is a clever idea for a recommendation app, providing the user can get a few Facebook friends onboard with the idea.

We’ve all seen and used apps that provide huge numbers of comments and reviews of restaurants, hotels, tourist attractions and places to be entertained. How do we know which source is reliable though? Everyone has different tastes as to what excites them. There’s also the slightly dubious issue of whether those who submit the reviews are unbiased and genuine. Ultimately, we all go back to one very reliable source: our friends. After all, they know us best and we know what they enjoy most too, to add some context to the opinion.

This is precisely what The Clique offers. Through a couple of taps, users link their Facebook friends with the app, thereby allowing them to scroll through their friends’ profiles to see what they recommend in the local area. In turn, the user can add their own reviews, thus making it easy for friends to see what is recommended and why.

It’s a very simple process and an ideal way to check what’s hot in the local area. Users can add as much or as little as they want to explain the place, as well as offer a star rating out of five. It’s easy to navigate around such areas, as well as attractive to look at.

The limitations lie in something that afflicts many apps of this kind, building up the user base. As a British user who must be ahead of the pack, I had to encourage some friends to sign up to truly get to grips with the interface. For circles of friends, however, this kind of app could spread in popularity. It deserves to as I’d much rather listen to a friend’s opinion on a place than a stranger’s. As a free app, it shouldn’t be a hard sell to friends either. Get those friends on board and The Clique is an ideal app to share opinions, without being swamped by unreliable sources, otherwise it may be a lonely place to be.

Mighty Mouse My Hero HD Review

iPad Only App – Designed for the iPad

CBS Interactive brings the cartoon classic to iOS gaming with loads of punch.

Developer: CBS Interactive

Overall Rating: 4.1 out of 5 stars

What do you get when you mix a classic super hero, albeit of diminutive size, with Jetpack Joyride style gameplay? If you’re CBS Interactive, and looking to export a beloved TV icon from the way-back machine to an iOS game, its all about a rodent who has come to save gamers’ day. Mighty Mouse My Hero HD (also available for iPhone) is a 2D platformer that while derivative, packs a distinct and challenging punch.

Mighty Mouse has been appearing on screens since the 1940’s and his iOS gaming debut imports his catch phrase and classic styling evoking warm memories for those who watched network cartoons from the 50’s through the 80’s. The game, with the sing-song “Here I come to save the day!” and great graphics is definitely going to bring in the nostalgia junkies.

Although level based, the game obviously draws its primary influence from endless runner/flyer Jetpack Joyride, which in turn borrowed from Tiny Wings winning formula. Here too players control airborne Mighty Mouse with the familiar tap to rise, let go to fall mechanic. Each level is laden with coins, or rather tiny cheese wheels, some even laid out to spell words right out of Halfbrick’s playbook.

There are single-use power-ups and level-skips that can be purchased with the cheese collected or fine fromage bundles purchased in-app. On offer too, some silly costumes, the wearing of which likely earns achievements and at minimum adds some extra charm.

Where this game departs from the formula is that Mighty Mouse is known to pack quite a wallop, so pummelling baddies with a tap on the punch button is essential. Hitting them head-on knocks them out and adds score boosts for combos. Also the levels have green mouldy cheddar-chips which, when eaten, deplete the currency collection.

While the levels are short they have a lot of variety to them. Some even require planning. It may take a few practice runs before players find the best strategy to survive and conquer on the harder boards that make up the total 60 spread across three worlds.

The only thing Might Mouse My Hero doesn’t borrow from the winning formula is objectives or missions. Without them the flights and fights can become a bit been-there, done-that. And, there is a strong push towards IAP’s as earning enough cheese is, for the best stuff, quite hard. Miss a few times on a level and a pop-over points players to the store.

Still, it is easy to enjoy the game without additional costs, the controls work very well, the design is appealing and in spite of myself I keep trying to make it past one more heart-shaped finish line.

Hunters 2 is Almost Here – Huzzah!

Okay folks, time to get ready. Start clearing off some space on that iOS device and set aside plenty of alone time because Hunters 2 is looming on the horizon. And not one of those “further away than it seems” horizons. I’m talking the kind of horizon that’s really, really close.

The original game was something of a smashing success, but it wasn’t exactly perfect. Many users took issue with the somewhat limited arsenal, the lack of much variation for the contracts, the repetitive environments, and so on. Well Rodeo Games has taken the criticism to heart. Hunters 2 will feature the same ridiculously awesome strategy gameplay, but also includes more. As in more of everything. More weapons, more environments, more gear, more environments, and even more features. Such as a full-blown campaign mode (*SQUEEE!!!*) It’s also looking pretty spiffy with the new real-time lighting effects. And are those new enemy types I see in those screen shots? I think they are.

Regrettably there still aren’t any real specifics about the launch, but Rodeo Games estimates that we can all look forward to seeing Hunters 2 on the App Store in just a couple of weeks. How much it’ll cost is still up in the air, but honestly, does it really matter? I’m fairly certain there are a ton of iOS users that are anxious to jump on it as soon as it’s available, no matter the price. Myself included.

Chillingo’s latest physics puzzler packs in sheepish twists.

Overall Rating: 3.85 out of 5 stars

Combining elements of billiards, pinball and mini-golf, Sticky Sheep adds a nice twist to the traditional physics-based puzzler. It’s simple and cute enough for the whole family, but mixes the gameplay elements in a way that will also appeal to experieced players.

Baxter is a beagle not a sheepdog, but he’s been recruited to shepherd some very errant sheep home. By home I mean targets on a playing field with Baxter acting as the projectile to knock the woolly miscreants into place.

Using a familiar control system, players adjust the force and trajectory of Snoopy’s sheep-herding cousin with a finger pull, hoping for the exact angle to bring the baaad posse to safety. The targets are sticky – hence the name – and very forgiving counting close calls as wins.

Like most physics puzzlers Sticky Sheep is broken into several environments from verdant to arid, each with levels that need to be unlocked in order.

The levels have more than sheep and Baxter, they have obstacles that range from very bouncy pinball bumpers to electrified fences, to switches that need to be hit to open gates. There are coins on each level for collecting. Rams are friends who can break boulders and other immovables, and be sure to avoid the black sheep; apparently they haven’t any wool.

Players have a limited number of tries and using fewer than allotted or landing close to the center of the targets earn extra points and bronze, silver or gold medals. After a bit of success a new mode, Arcade, unlocks. The game is essentially the same, but players are up against the clock. Successful combos add to the time limit and the mode offers a nice break from the level-locked puzzle formula.

Sticky Sheep is a family-friendly game with cute, if not especially remarkable, graphics and the difficulty level isn’t too high. For the physics puzzle addict, however, the interesting interplay between the putt-putt, pool, and pinball make this game, if not addictive, certainly habit forming.

There are a couple of trouble spots, one in the mechanics the other in design. The screen real estate is not used to maximum advantage. Most levels have a lot of empty space around the action. And, while the physics feel true, Baxter tends to roll longer than seems natural or logical knocking into perfectly placed sheep several seconds after a runaway ewe and Baxter appear to have come to a halt.

Sticky Sheep has Crystal Network and Game Center integration as well as Facebook posting for the serious braggart. There is a lot of replay value, not just in the two modes, but also in the gameplay itself. It’s one of those “just one more try” titles worth grabbing from the App Store.
