Finding the best apps around…

SportsBrush

Mobile Version

Pros:
-Numerous options to choose from
-Fun application to personalize your photos

Cons:
-Lag time on more than about 10 objects placed on the photo
-Bad placement of developer’s website link
-limited to 14 objects
-lacking objects from running sports (marathons, track, ice skating)

Sports Brush is a simple photo editing application that allows you to add multicolored, multi-transparent, sport-themed shapes on top of your photos.

There are a total of 14 shapes (a baseball, a basketball, a bat, a bocce ball, a bowling ball, a football, soccer ball, a helmet, a hockey stick, a ping pond paddle, a rugby ball, a tennis ball, a volleyball, and a solid circle) and several colors for each one.

Layout:
When you first open the application, you simply select a photo from you photos or take a picture with the iPhone camera. After selecting a photo, you will view the photo and in the bottom left-hand corner you can tap in the brush-icon as this will take you to the object-select screen.
Here you can select the object of the left side and the color on the right side. Below that are a set of sliders. The top one controls the diameter of the object and the second slider controls the transparency of the object(s) being placed on the photo. Below the sliders are to on/off buttons. The left one allows you to randomize the shape and the transparency of the object (overrides the sliders) and the right one, allows you to randomize the colors. I personally found that having the these two on as the results were quite neat. Once you have finished selecting you options, tap the “sketch” button at the top to return to your photo. You can then use your finger as the brush on the photo. You can always return to the objects and color by tapping the brush in the lower left corner. To save the picture you tap the save icon in the lower right-hand corner of the screen.

Issues:
The first initial objects came out very quickly, but after subsequent objects were placed on the photo there was a considerable amount of lag time. This isn’t really a problem if you are placing the objects one by one, but if you are trying drag your finger across the image- the lag time is very frustrating.
The undo button is okay – it undoes the objects one-by-one. If you are wanting to remove several or completely, it is going to take you some time to complete.
The screen where you select from the pictures or the camera, in the bottom right-corner is an info screen (nothing wrong with this). In the bottom left-hand corner, is an icon that take you out of the app and into Safari.app to take you to the developer’s website. While I am not opposed to having a website link, I think it should be in the info tab, not on the main interface because it can catch people by surprise and ruin the user experience.

Overall:
I think this is a nifty little application, but I really would like to see more objects added to the list. At $0.99 , this not a bad application to get started with.

Fitness Day Journal

Mobile Version

Fitness Day Journal (iFiness on iPhone icon) is an application that helps you keep track of your fitness activities (exercises) by listing the instances you have done them and visual graphs of your activities

Fitness Day Journal is relatively simple and easy to use. On the main page, at the top is a graph and below it, is the list of your recent activities, most recent at the top. By tapping on the graph, you can rotate through three graphs – Daily Calories within the last month, Weekly Calories within the last year, Daily Calories within the last week.

I noticed that there was a yearly graph, however, if I were to keep track of my activities for a year on this application, there is no way to find one activity out of hundreds of activities completed. Also the graph is horribly small for any discerning ability to be possible.

To enter an activity to tap on the “+” button, the data that was last used will appear in the blacks and can be changed as necessary. I thought this was nice if you tend to do the same activities repeatedly. Also by entering your current weight it will auto estimate the Calories that you burned.

The activity list has hundreds of activities in it (or so it seems, didn’t count them.)
Within the activity panel, besides listing all the activities, there is also a tab for listing your most recent activities.

You can also search the database of activities in order find your activity. Many of the activities also have alternates, meaning there is walking, 2.5 mph and Walking, 3.0 mph or even Walking 3.0 mph, Downhill. So while there are numerous activities, there are just as many options for some.

Overall:
I like the simplicity of the application, but I can’t see anyone using this application for an extended period of time. If you need small activity tracking for a short period of time, this might be the app for you, but if you are looking for something more complex for training, etc. The graphs are simply to hard to read and its simple log, is, well – too simple. With the ability to search your current log and enlarging the graphs or even the ability to customize and activity, this app will have more potential.

iAstrology

NOTE: THIS APPLICATIO IN NO LONGER AVAILABLE IN THE APP STORE.

Mobile Version

Pros:
-High Quality Astronomy pictures
-Information provided with pictures

Cons:
-Info page doesn’t scroll correctly
-Contact button refers to a webpage that doesn’t reference application.
-Contact button on main screen throws user experiece away from the norm.
-Overpriced

2/5

iAstrology is an astronomy picture of the day viewer.

Each day a new picture can be viewed

If you tap on the “Info” button in the bottom left-hand corner you can view information about the picture.

The application itself seems to be a feed reader in essence, as under the the info screen after the description, it looks like other items that would normally be on a web page are are also included on this screen.

While viewing the image, in the bottom right-hand corner is an address, and all this really is, is the developer’s website. (it quits the app and opens in Safari) I can’t say that I am horribly fond of having the developers information on the initial screen… I’d rather have the standard “info” button take me to an about screen that has support or contact information.

Note to developer: The “support/contact” site needs to be redone. There is no reference to you developing the iPhone application on the current website.

Overall:
I think the application does a nice job of viewing the pictures it does and having the information provided with it, however, I don’t like the fact that I can’t save the photo or favorite it or something in that sense. I think iAstrology isn’t a very good name for this app unfortunately, because quite frankly, I originally thought this application had something to do with Astrology, not Astronomy. The picture info page has something wrong with the scroll feature, it jumps about, it’s not smooth scrolling. While I think this application has potential, I don’t think it’s quite there yet, especially at $4.99
